It's been a long time since we've had a good, front-page AT Radar discussion.  Let's remedy that, shall we?

I've reached an odd point in my game buying.  At one time, I could rattle off dozens of games that I was interested in tracking down, and probably another dozen that I was anxiously expecting.  These days, it's a little more difficult.

Of stuff that's out, I'm mostly in purusit of the odd expansion here or there.   I have just gotten Arkham Horror (yeah, I know, late to the party) and the first expansion to that comes highly recommended.  I'm also looking pretty heavily at the Starcraft: Brood War expansion, because it looks awesome.  The Tannhauser expansion would be nice to add a little spice, but holy crap no way can I justify paying what the original game used to cost for far less in terms of figures and cardboard.

And who's bright idea was it to reprint one of the original boards on the back of the board in the new set?  INCONCEIVABLE!

Anyway, after that I'm drawing blanks.  I really want to try out Age of Conan because I really enjoy both Marvel Heroes and War of the Ring, but we're so stuffed to the gills with "dudes on a map" games that it would really struggle to find table time.  Ditto adventure games; I need to put a sign up that says "FULL AT THE INN, NO MAS, POR FAVOR~!"

So for the first time in awhile I'm having a hard time thinking of stuff to keep in the ol' handy-dandy AT Radar.

dune.jpgDune (FFG Reprint):  We still know just about as much about this as we did when it was announced.  Mechanics only with a Twilight Imperium retheme, which doesn't bother me too badly even though I'm a Dune fan.  You know it's going to have the FFG treatment in terms of production.  I would gladly pick up the original if I could find one that didn't cost $75 and still look like it had been through someone's washing machine.  So I'll take "in print", however I can get it at this point.

gearsofwar.jpg

Gears of War:  Another one that was announced and then seemingly forgotten about, I hope that this time FFG uses this to do Tannhauser the "right" way--give us a lot of meat on a good boardgame representation of a multi-player first-person shooter.  Personally I'm looking forward to it just to see the figs.

spyisengard.jpg

Middle Earth Quest:   This could be extremely awesome or entirely lame.  This is another one where details have been scarce...to scarce.  I just hope it doesn't end up like that lame Electronic Arts Lord of the Rings game where you played knock-offs of the Fellowship members doing half-assed representations of the stuff the real Fellowship did.   (Incidentally, looking up images for this article made me realize--I had this book as a kid!)

ahsoka.jpg

Star Wars: Clone Wars Epic Duels:  Though I know this won't be out for another little while, it hasn't stopped me from looking at the mass marketer shelves every time I'm there.  I'm really hoping we don't get only six figures, but Epic Duels is a great game that probably would've gotten a sequel if it hadn't been for Star Wars Miniatures.  This one is a must-buy for me.

War of the Roses:  Gah, I remember writing about this one in an AT radar segment like two years ago.  I'm assuming it didn't 'stealth' by me at some point and this is still in development.  With movies, if there are this many delays it's always a bad sign, but I'm looking forward to the new hotness from Columbia Games.

That's not a very large list.  At all.  Though I am interested in the "Death Race 2000"-inspired game that Frank mentioned in one of his latest blogs, coming from Z-Man games.  If they can do that theme justice, I'm all in, baby.

Anybody got any other ideas?  I'm all ears.

These will be purchased as soon as they hit the shelves.

    Tales of the Arabian Nights
    Talisman Dungeon

  • avatarKen B.

See? That's what these are for. Thanks!

  • avatarSchweig!

I'm currently trying to get a hold on a copy of HERE I STAND.

    I already played it (ftf).

  • avatarmetalface13

I, too, have too many adventure games, but I really love Middle-Earth, so if Middle Earth Quest is at all good, then it'll probably find its way to my shelves.

Same with Tales of the Arabian Nights.

  • avatarhancock.tom

Yeah Tales of the Arabian Nights came to mind for me.

All Things Zombie: The boardgame by lock and load publishing.

Oh My God! There's An Axe In My Head." The Game of International Diplomacy

    Reins of Power?

Also, since you brought up Columbia's war of the roses, here are some medium weight wargames I'm looking forward to:

Crown of Roses by GMT (supposedly combining block game fog of war with CDG-cards and Memoir style dice for combat, and plays 2-4.
    Hearts and Minds: Vietnam -CDG
Lincoln's War -CDG, I'm hoping better than Price of Freedom.
    Washington's War
Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Kursk

    Angola Reprint

  • avatarubarose

Since people have mentioned games that are already on the shelves, I'll add Aye, Dark Overlord!

I haven't bought it yet, because I am waiting for Tales and Talisman Dungeon. That's how I sensibly use the free shipping minimum.

  • avatarBullwinkle

Field Commander: Alexander is expected from the printer in early May.

  • avatarMattLoter

Pretty much if something has hobbits in it, I'm stoked.

I would love it if Gears of War did Tannhauser right. I wanted to like that game so much and it was just so meh overall. The cool parts need to be taken and put into a game that's actually fun and interesting.

I'm really stoked to try OMG:there's an axe in my head, I've been waiting for it for what seems like forever.

Another must buy for me is the Call of Duty real time card game. I demoed it over a year ago and it was pretty awesome and different. For like $10 it's a no brainer for me to pick a deck up along with some friends getting their own decks. It keeps not coming out though which is getting me worried that it might have gotten shit canned.

  • avatarBulwyf

I can't think of a single AT or wargame title that's due out in the next 6 months that's a current must-buy for me. Going beyond that here are some games I am looking forward to:

Ghost Stories expansion (White Moon Rising?) - My favorite game from last year's essen crop. I figured with its modular design it was a shoe-in for an expansion

Nations at War: White Star Rising - A refinement of LnL's World at War system taken to WW2 and the western front.

Nightfighter - The designer of Burning Blue takes on nightfighter vs bomber operations over Europe during WW2. This time instead of a traditional 2 player wargame one of the players is a referee running the action for the nightfighter player. The referee structure sounds like the game will have a compelling fog-of-war aspect.

While it's not exactly pure AT, I'm going to finally get a Bowen Simmons wargame when Guns of Gettysburg comes out (whenever that is). The other two Simmon's games are great, but the Napoleonic theme just isn't my thing.

Also, I love Friedrich. Supposedly the designer, Richard Sivel, is designing a similar but shorter version of it, designed around the War of Austrian Succession. But judging on the how precise Richard likes to be in his designs, I expect that one to come out in 2015.

  • avatarhancock.tom

Guns of Gettysburg is one I forgot, that is pretty exciting too.

  • avatarDr. Mabuse

What happened to FFG's The Song of Ice and Fire (A Game of Thrones) adventure game? That's dropped off the radar as well.

  • avatarShellhead

FFG is probably waiting (along with everybody else) for A Dance With Dragons to get published.

  • avatarJoelCFC25

The last time I read one of Jerry Taylor's design diary entries on BGG, it sounded like the Dalgliesh brothers at Columbia were taking things in a dramatically different direction with the game. It appears that it may eventually happen as two separate games.

  • avatarJoelCFC25

Sorry, that comment was meant to be about Wars of the Roses.

That sounded interesting, especially after the revelation that Middle Earth Quest will need a player to control the enemies ( http://dreamwithboardgames.blogspot.com/2009/04/interview-with-corey- konieczka.html ). My interest in that one has dropped pretty much to zero...

Ah man, I already have Descent for that. I always get stuck being the bad guys ...

Well if it's done in a new and unique way ... maybe.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

Most of this bores me, to be honest.

DUNE reprint...I'm so lukewarm on it at this point. A year ago, it was exciting. Now, I'm just thinking "why am I going to buy that when I own DUNE already and it's a masterpiece as it is". Was it officially stated that it would be a TI theme? I didn't hear that. I think we talked about how it would be cool, but I don't remember official word.

I'm actually more interested in the BORDERLANDS reprint. That's a terribly underplayed and underappreciated game that fewer people actually own. Let's see if they actually do it.

TALES OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is a game that every single person who visits this website should buy, no questions asked. I will violate my "no game purchases" policy to get it. It's one of the top games of all time, and the new edition looks like it's going to be the definitive version.

TALISMAN: DUNGEON- must have. I'd still rather see DUNGEONQUEST reprinted though.

OH MY GOD THERE'S AN AXE IN MY HEAD looks pretty good...it's been delayed or something though, I don't think they ever announced who was actually publishing it.

New Richard Sivel game? Now that could be worth looking into...FRIEDRICH is awesome.

  • avatarSagrilarus

I wonder how big the first printing will be on Arabian Nights? I hope he goes at least 500.

    Sag.

  • avatarJonJacob

Tales of the Arabian Nights does look pretty cool but I am pumped about Nexus and The Eagle and the Lion

    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22420

there's the TOS link... it looks pretty awesome.

  • avatarubarose

Zev said he was going for it with Tales, and doing a big printing up front. He has a lot of confidence in it, and from what I've heard, so do I.

  • avatarmjl1783

I wouldn't hold my breath for the Eon re-prints coming out any time soon. And when they do, what makes you think they'll be any cheaper than buying one of the old games?

If you want to get your Eon on, I recommend picking up a copy of Star Trek: The Enterprise4 Encounter. I just got a sealed one for $10, which isn't unusual. It may not be Dune or CE, but it's damn good game that will still leave you wondering when the hell these modern designs are going to catch up with what Mssrs. Olotka, Kittredge, and Eberle were doing decades ago. Also, the theme is such a paste job that you don't need to be a Star Trek fan at all to like it.

  • avatarMichael Barnes

ENTERPRISE ENCOUNTER is great. It's a fun card game with some batshit crazy ideas (par for course for an EON game). Apparently it was a western theme but WEG stuck Trek on it. I like that it's Trek, it makes the game somehow more absurd.

  • avatarmetalface13

Oh yeah, Clone Wars: Epic Duels might be worth picking up. I do hope it comes with more than 6 dudes though.

Yeah, I'd heard about the western thing. The combat system sure would make more sense in that context, but then nothing else would. I do like the way they referenced like every single episode of the show, and how the rulebook makes a point of noting which episode featured the "Cochrane Acceleration" as though it actually somehow matters. At any rate, it's definitely one of those "could have been mass market" games, it's part Sorry!, part Guess Who, but with just enough quirks to put it into hobby game territory. It'd be cool to see it make the "Games from the Crypt" cut some day.

If Z-Man actually gets Kings & Things to market this year, I'll be pretty happy. In the meantime, Carthaginian (the MR redesign guy) has done a facelift for King of the Tabletop, colorizing Trampier's original art. It's worth a look if you happen to have any PnP materials handy. It shoudn't cost you more than a few bucks. Outside of what's been said, there's not much. I may be alone on this one, but I'm looking pretty hard at Small World, but then I've been wanting to try Vinci for a while. Kriegbot looks charming, even if it's one of Barnes' poster children for "no reason to own."

Honestly, I'm hoping this year will be even slower than last year. It'll give me time to play more of what I have, and I can catch up on some games I've been wanting to get. Hopefully, I'll be able to trim a little fat from my collection while I'm at it.

Everything else = Shit on a shingle

Of course it won't be as good. There's none of the classic characters. No Han, Chewie, Vader or Stormtroopers. But I'm not paying $50 for a used copy that somebody paid $5 for at the clearance bin.

  • avatarjpat

Most of what's coming up for me are wargame-related, which are probably more for show than for play, unfortunately, if history is a guide. Looking forward in particular to 1805: Sea of Glory and also Washington's War.

Tales of the Arabian Nights does look very, very good, for sure.

I get the point about Tannhauser, a game I've actually warmed up to a bit after a rocky start, but it's a Take on You game rather than strictly an FFG game; other than the horrendous delays in getting the French products into English, I don't think FFG has much control over the packaging or general price-for-value. I could be wrong about that. It was, I believe, also ToY's idea to reprint one side of the board for Novgorod; it's more of a bonus (of sorts) than a replacement for a second new board that was never going to be there.

The price has gone down since the announcement of that Clone Wars version, and I think it's definitely gonna be waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than the new version. I picked up mine for $35 shipped, totally unpunched or anything. We played it 11 times the first night we got it.

  • avatarAlmalik

Innsmouth, Talisman Dungeon, and Tales are no brainers, as is the new Ed Beach (Here I stand) game.

Space Alert will get a serious looking at when the North American release hits, as will the Prophecy expansions if they make it out in 2009.

oh, and Thrilling Tales of Adventure if it gets a publisher. Hopefully the new version of Divine Right (DR6) gets finished soon as well (it'll probably be a PDF or Print 'n Play).

  • avatarSchweig!

TALES OF THE ARABIAN NIGHTS is really a cool game. A revised German edition was on sale not long ago for about €20 (=$743). I don't think I will get the new edition though.

Upcoming games I look forward to:

SLAPSHOT Reprint by Columbia Games, currently on pre-order.

    More war games:

BREAKTHROUGH: CAMBRAI the next area impulse system game (STORM OVER ANRHEM system)

REAL WEAPONS expends the LANDSHIPS WWI tactical system into the early years of WWII (France) and also covers the Spanish Civil War

also NO QUESTION OF SURRENDER, ANGOLA

  • avatarmjl1783

I've got a wargame embargo on. There are a whole bunch of them I'd like to try, but they're expensive as fuck, considering I'll most likely have to PBEM. Angola might make it through, and if I can wrangle up a good deal on Warriors of God, I may pick that up. Other than that, I just can't afford to buy them.

Well that's not bad at all.

I thought the price had been dropping ever since Episode III came out.

Upon further inspection, I checked Epic Duels prices on ebay, there are two copies both with several hours to go and one is $46 and the other $61. And all the ones for sales on BGG's marketplace are like $75 and up.

  • avatarAlmalik

Still worth it at $50 or $60 in my opinion. Great fun getting 4 characters out there scrapping (and damn Vader and that All Too Easy card of his).

Hopefully the Clone Wars version is compatible (ie. the characters are balanced in power versus the old figures so they can be used with the old rules)

  • avatarSagrilarus

I have a couple on pre-order but for the moment it appears my money is safe -- preorder numbers have stalled since last Fall.

I joked about Arabian Night's print size, but everyone has the safety off on it. I'm more than a bit concerned that I may get to the store a week late and miss it. Z-Man's site does not have pre-orders, and this one would have been a good choice for a first time.

    Sag.

  • avatarMrZir

I'm also waiting for Tales of the Arabian Nights and Talisman:Dungeon. I'm thinking about getting Battlestar Galactica and Starcraft but I know I won't have a chance to play either for a while. I also realized that I could blow my entire game budget on expansions for games I already own, so some balance is an order.

  • avatarAlmalik

Oh, I guess you can add the Descent Quest Compendium coming out this summer to this list as well.

I dunno, honestly I didn't try very hard to get that copy so cheap. I bet the ones on eBay that are so expensive are sealed? The sealed copies go for much more. And the people on BGG's marketplace just don't know about the value of the game dropping, I think.
