Magic, Jesus and Backstage Stage Passes to the Apocalypse
It's a holiday here in the states, so we are taking the day off and republishing an old favorite here on the front page (originally published 04/14/2008). Back in the days when my husband Al and I were newlyweds, we rented the second floor of our house to three guys. Al was the only one with a regular job, and he only worked school hours. The rest of us were often "between jobs" and when we were working, it typically wasn't normal hours. So at our house you could pretty much find someone to...

Dragon 2010 Report
OK, I've recieved several emails and a phone call asking where today's Cracked LCD is. I kept thinking that maybe Bill Abner had finally had enough of my crap and decided that he would not run this year's Dragon Con 2010 report. Either that or the makers of MAFIA II gave him some concrete shoes. Come to find out, I was just dumb and sent my column to Abner's Gmail account, which he uses solely for doling out work schedules and assignments. Doh. So at some point in the next 24 hours, you will...

Annual GenCon Rant
It's that time of year again, kids. When the fat man rolls up in big red ride and brings joy and cheer to all the gamers of the world. Only in this case, the fat man is in a YuGiOh shirt, his vehicle is littered with mostly-empty Mountain Dew cans and discarded candy wrappers, and the joy and cheer he brings is accompanied by copious amounts of horribly offensive body odor. Also, he probably has a foam sword. Yes, it's GenCon season, and for the first time in five years, I'm NOT there. It's hard to...

Day of the Dead Energy Levels: Another Gonzo Tale of Gaming Fun
It was about one o' clock in the afternoon when the regrets of insomnia set in - I had slept too late yet again and barely managed to budge myself out of bed, shower - and get ready for what I was unprepared for - by far the longest game of Talisman I had ever played - but also the most brutal session of Tekken 6 I had ever experienced. But we did more than that, my friends, oh yes, we did more. First of all while I waited for my friend...

Electronic Versions of Games: Good for Business?
Here's a list of games...1960: The Making of the President10 Days in the USAAblaze!BlokusCitadelsGuillotineHansaJamaicaKahunaKill Doctor LuckyMr. JackSettlers of CatanTikalVegas ShowdownSo what is the significance of that list? If you answered, a list of mostly mediocre Euro style games, well... I wouldn't necessarily disagree. Some of those games I don't really play much anymore or have as high opinion of as I once did when I bought them, and a few I have since traded away. But the point is that I bought them... and more importantly, I bought them after having played a version of them on my...

When he paused I knew he was a Cylon. He didn't need to do anything. Pause, Cylon. As he stuttered I imagined a brig door at the far end of the huge ship swinging open.Alright maybe you need a little bit of background into the group to appreciate that this has nothing to do with strategy or tactics. I'm a tactical guy don't get me wrong; I can work the decision tree with the best of them. But sometimes it's even easier than that, and maybe even more dependable. Commander Adama was Commander...

"The game is on.  I'm flat on my belly, inching forward through scrubby brush trying to keep as low as I possibly can.  With yesterday's rain I'm good and dirty.  My weapon's out in front of me and every few feet I'm sighting down it, laying it on its side so that neither it nor I have to rise even an inch above the undergrowth.  Success or failure depends upon surprise; lives are in the balance Not really.  This is laser-tag at a kid's birthday party.

The Cracked LCD Countdown: 10 Games Every Gamer Should Own
The Count suggests a couple of interesting questions: 1. Where and on whom does he feed? 2. Does having a vampire's castle in the neighborhood lower property values on Sesame Street? That all has nothing to do with this week's Cracked LCD, which is an all-new monthly feature called the Cracked LCD Countdown. Someone wrote in and suggested a top ten list of the games all gamers should own, so I obliged. Plus, lists are good because they make people argue. I like to make people argue, and what's more...

F:ATties and Gaming with Kids
Thinking back, though, over the history of F:AT since its blog days, there seem to be few discussions about gaming with kids (besides the great articles and posts by Uba). F:ATties discuss gaming when they were kids, but I see few posts about gaming with kids or about their kids gaming. I’ve often wondered about this gap in F:AT’s forums. Is it because no one wants to replicate BGG posts about trying to get their 4 year old to play Caylus (KingPut, can you help us out on that one) ? Or is it that the F:AT demographic is...

What does this man have to do with DOOM?
You may ask yourself "why the hell was John Romero, designer of DAIKATANA, talking about Sid Sackson last week?" The answer is that Mr. Doom himself was giving a talk about the "Masters of Game Design" at a symposium at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The event was called "The Art History of Gaming", and it was an attempt to move toward a greater appreciate of gaming as an artistic medium.
