DS Puzzle games - Massive Compilation

Hot
I Updated
There Will Be Games

Warning: This is rather large. And I don't know if it really belongs here or not. We'll see.

I've compiled a massive list of DS puzzle games. I've tried to be as exhaustive as possible, although there are definitely some Japanese games I'm missing, and there's always a few that slip through the cracks. So without further ado:

The Kick-ass

Puzzle Series Vol 5 - Slitherlink (Japanese import only) OK so first of all in Japan they have a Puzzle Series. Second of all, this is my absolute favorite puzzle game. Read this:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/puzzle-series-vol-5-slitherlink-review

I stopped playing because it just got too hard after a while. But it keeps calling me back...

Picross 3d (Rittai Picross in Japan) This is not out in English yet (will be shortly) however the Japanese import version is trivial to navigate. This is Picross in 3D which I find much superior to the 2D original. After a while with 2D I felt like I had learned everything and the puzzles got so large they were tedious to slog through. Not so here. Truly awesome.

Prism Light the Way Seriously awesome puzzler. Use mirrors and other devices to aim correctly colored lights at their receptacles. Great hint system for the first puzzles. Gets pretty hard.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box Yes, get these. So far the second one incorporates the puzzles better into the storyline which is nice. Honestly it's the presentation, characters, and variety that make these games rather than any particular puzzle.

The Very Good

Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords Match 3 puzzle combined with rpg. Very addicting if you're into rpgs. Each type of character (there are 4) has different spells that can be cast by matching different colored gems. Turn-based puzzle battles against the AI (or another human via local wifi). Plus variants of the match 3 puzzle are used to acquire cool items, mounts, and so forth.

Jumble Madness Lots and lots of Anagrams. Exactly like those Jumble puzzles from the newspaper. Timed or untimed versions. Good smooth interface with good letter recognition. I love this for my occasional anagram needs.

Peggle Dual Shot Peggle. Fun, especially in short bursts.

Mechanic Master Kind of like a low grade version of the Incredible Machine games. Basically, build Rube Goldberg contraptions. A little easy, at the lower levels at least, and the interface feels a bit clunky. Still, very cool.

Picross DS http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonogram is a good explanation. Don't read the solution techniques, though, or you will have exhausted all the fun. This is a great version of Picross; the only downside is that you have to scroll across the screen sometimes to see the larger puzzles, which is really unfortunate and leads to mishits occasionally. Still, recommended. Very addictive plus it's fun to see the pictures you've created. However, see Picross 3d above.

Mahjong Quest Expeditions A surprisingly good puzzler based on solitaire Mahjong but with some really nice variations. Recommended if you like solitaire Mahjong.

Neves Tangrams! So if you like tangrams, you will like this! They start off pretty easy, but they get at least moderately challenging after a while. The presentation is a little off but doesn't get in the way of tangramming all over the place.

Meteos Match 3 with lots of twists. Good music that is tied into the gameplay. Matching the blocks causes them to launch in the air like rockets, comboing causes them to fly off the screen. Do that enough and you launch to the next planet. Each planet has its own theme music and slightly different playstyle (gravity is different, for example). Very clever. There's also a Disney themed sequel which sounds lame.

The New York Times Crosswords Really good interface. Worth it if you like hard crosswords.

Solitaire Overload Lots and lots of versions of solitaire. Well implemented. A good time-waster if you like solitaire at all.

The Ones I Haven't Played Or Suck At But Are Supposed to be Good

Pic Pic (Europe import only) By reputation this is the best DS puzzler after Slitherlink. I haven't got my hands on it yet to know if I agree.

Wordjong This game broke my head. Solitaire mahjong, with words. Each tile is a letter. You have to get rid of all the tiles by spelling words with them. Better not run out of vowels! Too hard to be fun for me.

Puchi Puchi Virus Time based puzzler. Viruses pop onto the screen - you must eliminate them by forming triangles (touching the vertices of the triangle). However, viruses left too long turn to stone and can't be eliminated the normal way. I really sucked at it so I didn't enjoy it but it seems like it would be a refreshing change of pace for those better at this kind of thing.

Mario vs Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis (plus DSi downloadable version) kind of like Lemmings, you have to guide a bunch of minature Marios to the exit while getting them past traps and whatnot. Good reviews. I should play this.

Magnetica A remake of Zuma for the PC. Supposedly a good puzzler, with a good interface.

Planet Puzzle League (on dsiWare as well) A remake of the old Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League games. Slide blocks left and right to match 3. Shoot for combos. Etc. Supposedly good heads up as well. Not my kind of game but this is very well reviewed.

Mr Driller: Drill Spirits A game that exists on many consoles. I have never played it. Drill through blocks to rescue people? Action puzzler. Supposedly a good version.

Air Traffic Chaos Be an air traffic controller. Really. Great review here: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/air-traffic-chaos-review

The Decent

Margot's Word Brain A nice word game collection. None of the games are brilliant but taken together they're all pretty good.

Rubik's World Not just solving the Rubik's cube (although that is included) lots of other little puzzlers abound. Some of them are quite cute. Decent puzzler.

Scrabble Yup, it's scrabble. AI is supposed to be passable but eh. It beat the crap out of me but then I suck at scrabble.

Jeweled Quest: Expeditions A cute Bejeweled PC port that adds a silly story and a couple other gimmicks.

Polarium A clever puzzler. Flip tiles to make rows that are all black or all white. Pretty abstract; I got kinda bored. But certainly something new and interesting.

Super Collapse 3 Yet another Match 3 game. This one sounds pretty generic but well put together.

Zenses: Ocean and Zenses: Rainforest I haven't played these. Reviews say Rainforest is the best and that they're both light puzzle packages that offer relaxing puzzles to play once in a while.

Jeweled Quest: Solitaire An odd-sounding combination of card solitaire and Bejeweled. Sounds different enough from standard Bejeweled to be interesting. A port of the PC game.

Pipe Mania Yes, this would be the "guide the blob to the exit by building a pipe network" game. Supposedly a good version of it.

Brain Buster Puzzle Pak A decent intro to a variety of different unusual puzzle. Short.

Cake Mania + 2 Ports of the PC games. Action puzzlers - bake the right cakes and deliver them to your customers in time. Decent ports.

Candace Kane's Candy Factory Port of PC/Wii game. Action puzzlers - sell candy to customers.

Diner Dash Not unlike Cake mania. Good reviews. This one is preferred over PSP version due to stylus.

Honeycomb Beat I know nothing about this other than that reviews are mixed. Good review here http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/dsrev/roundup3.htm about halfway down the page.

USA Today Puzzle Craze Only found one review, which said it was a good collection of word puzzles, more than just crosswords. Sounds decent.

The Not-so-Great

Puzzle Quest: Galactix Same idea as PQ:Warlords except in space. Instead of standard match 3 it's all hexes and you can influence which way the next group of hexes fall. Instead of leveling up your character you build your ship (your character levels up also but the effects aren't as dramatic). I found it got tedious faster than its predecessor, partially because at the beginning you have to do one type of particularly uninteresting puzzle (opening gates between solar systems) over and over again. I liked Warlords much better.

Puzzle Kingdoms Same idea as the other puzzle quests, set in generic fantasy kingdoms land. This time, although you do level up, most of the abilities are provided through soldiers you recruit from your various kingdoms. Soldiers require you to match different amounts of colored gems to attack the enemy. A decent setup but I found the puzzle to be too tedious: you slide individual rows up down left or right, and 3 in any formation will match; in practice it seemed too luck based. Also all the battles feel exactly the same; in Warlords different enemies had vastly different abilities. I liked Warlords better.

Chameleon: To Dye For Race the AI to a spot in the randomized board by slowly converting the board to your color. Cute but simplistic and gets tedious.

Crosswords DS Avoid this unless you really really like wordsearch. The crosswords are trivial and anagrams is tedious and boring. Wordsearch is well done but my god.

Exit DS For those that have a PSP, get this on that instead. A cool puzzler that has you rescuing people from buildings is let down by its DS implementation that requires you to tap the screen 3 times for every movement your guy makes.

Clubhouse Games OK, I hated this game. 40 minigames, including Hearts, (a crappy version of) Poker, a decent version of darts, some weird dexterity things, Ludo (also known as Sorry!), and others. The problem I had is that the AI sucks ass. If you get it to play against other people it might be worthwhile. But others seem to love it, so YMMV.

USA Today Crosswords Supposedly worse interface than the New York Times one. That's all I know.

Gunpey Listed for completeness. Reviews are mediocore at best and it sounds pretty uncompelling.

Professor Heinz Wolff's Gravity (weird name) Kinda Incredible Machine like except without the Goldberg type contraptions, just blocks and balls. Also the interface is worse - can get very frustrating trying to position everything.

Best for Kids (too easy for adults)

Pet Alien Use 5 different aliens and their special abilities to get through cleverly designed levels. The best part about this one are the boss battles, which are easy but really cool.

Kurupoto Cool Cool Stars A clever idea - rotate the maze in 90-degree increments to get the smiley face to the goal. Very cute presentation.

Neopets Puzzle Adventure Part of the Puzzle Quest family, this one changes it up quite a bit. The puzzle here is Othello. Rather than level up etc, you gather Neopets which give you different abilities. The main problem is that there aren't many variations, so it's basically straight Othello over and over. Plus the AI isn't particularly good.

The sort of puzzle games

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventures A match 3 puzzle on the bottom (with a couple twists) and a platform game on top. Killing a critter on top spawns a critter block on the bottom, and if the critter block reaches the top of the bottom (if you know what I mean) it reappears on top again. Pretty cool, gets fairly difficult.

Trauma Center Under the Knife (+sequel) Play doctor. Doesn't sound like it would be a puzzler but it turns out to perform operations succesfully you have to remember exactly what to do in the right order and do it perfectly. The first one is brutally hard (precision and speed are required) while the second is reputed to have an easier mode. People who love them swear by them, the rest of us just swear at them.

N+ This is like an action puzzler. Based on the (recommended) flash game. Also available for PSP. Pilot your little stick ninja across fiendishly difficult levels, picking up gold on the way. The physics and deaths are awesome.

Lost in Blue (+ 2 sequels) Survive on a deserted island. Reportedly very difficult at the beginning as you struggle to stay alive, and apparently each version of the island has its own secrets. The third one won kudos for having your companion be able to survive on his/her own for a while, at least in comparison to the first two. I never played but am intrigued.

Tower Defense Games

Puzzlers of a certain type. I happen to dislike tower defense games, but hey.

Desktop Tower Defense A straight port of a flash game. A good port. Reviews seem to focus on the fact that you can get the game for free.

Ninjatown Really really cute ninjas. Standard tower defense.

Lock's Quest Tower defense + RPG. You actually play a character, Lock, and can run around and repair towers and beat on enemies during the waves. Reviewed very well.

DSIWare Art Style Games

I know nothing about these, just that they exist and some of their predecessors on GBA were awesome.

Art Style: AQUIA

Art Style: BOXLIFE

Art Style: CODE

Art Style: KUBOS

Art Style: NEMREM

Art Style: PiCTOBiTS

Adventure Games

Kind of like puzzlers. This part is not exhaustive at all.

Phoenix Wright I never got through these but others swear by them. Very linear, most of the puzzles involve catching exactly where the defendant slipped up in trial. The writing and characters are pretty goofy. Start at the beginning.

Broken Sword Shadow of the Templars A port of a classic PC adventure game. Never played the original or this one but it's gotten great reviews.

Secret Files Tunguska (+sequel) A port of an OK PC adventure game. Nothing special. Plot tries to be suspenseful but borders on silly instead. Writing and puzzles are decent.

Touch Detective (+sequel) really really cute, but the puzzles let it down. Solutions are completely unintuitive and come out of nowhere. Play it with a walkthrough, maybe.

Mystery Case Files MillionHeir A find-the-hidden-object "adventure" game. Good if you like those.

Syberia A port of the classic PC adventure game. I never cared much for the original, but lots of people swear by it. Sadly the port got bad reviews.

Unsolved Crimes Supposed to be not very good crimes to solve.

Sherlock Holmes DS Don't play this. Caused me severe pain.

Myst DS A horrible horrible port of the classic PC adventure game. Stay far far away.
