Frank's Birthday Extravaganza

There Will Be Games

Ok it wasn't actually called that.  It was actually called Mercer Gameday, formerly known as the Mercer Gameday Extravaganza.

Mercer is a local college who has been very kind to the gaming community and offers to host a big game day from time to time in their enormous  conference center which incidentally looks just like the Justice League Fortress.

 mercer

Two years ago Frank, myself, and several other people helped coordinate a games day that turned out to be a bit over the top. It also happened to coincide with Frank's birthday. Frank brought lots of toys and weirdness which was fun but a hassle to lug in and set up. There were tourneys and prizes and registrations- sheesh it was hard to get actual gaming in.

This time, he went for simple and it turned out GREAT.  In typical Frank style he quietly set it all up, then sent a few understated messages out that there would be gaming. It was virtually free, with lots of room and in a caveat to his wife Sandy- a special room just for Beatles Rock Band.

I having been on gaming lockdown for about 6 weeks finally broke free and gamed till my hearts content. And this is what I did:

Showed up late at 11 am. Though it started at 10 I could not get out of the house. I was selling off a ton of games and was also bringing a bunch. Note to self: load the car the night before.

Marrakesh

Marrakesh- my friend Janna Nelson came down from Columbia. She is great and she is possibly the only person I know that is bawdier than me. We were chatting when Sandi introduced us to two newcomers. The four of us sat down to Marrakesh which is a great little "take that" game. A meeple with a fez walks around and you pay out every time he lands on an opponent's rug. Then you lay one of your rugs next to him.  Though the theme is lame, it totally works and is a pretty funny to play. I don't own this game but really should. The only other quirky game I don't own is ...

mummy

Flucht Der Mummy- Joel Weeks joined us and was determined to slay us all as the mummy. Here is another game that is too weird and fun not to own. There is a thread about it on the Fort but here is the summary. You're adventurers on one side of the map trying to navigate to specific treasures. You roll the dice and move one of the die but loose any die that is a mummy.  The mummy moves a die roll on his turn as well and sooner or later he'll get to move those extra dice when you need them back. He's on the other side of the metal board and can't see you but the pawns are magnetic so when he runs over you  you "click".

We skunked Joel and he was at a loss to find us with the exception of Janna who was complete mummy chow.

I'm the boss

I'm The Boss- I'll tell ya right now if you play I'm the boss with DanBaden, you're going to loose. The only way you won't is if I spend all game harranging him and warning off the other players. We're gone toe to toe dozens of times in many games and inevitably it feels like Dan Vs Me with everyone else spectating. The thing is I  have to work at it and Dan just naturally emanates an aura of trust that is almost palpable. After the Diplomacy incident of May 2009 - I had to back off. He won handily with about twice as much money as everyone else. Fun game though and great practice for when I have to wheel and deal to get my soul back from the underworld.

marvel

Marvel Smackdown - That's what I call it. I forget the specific title. I had been trying to get in a play of Richard Launius' new Arkham Horror Dice Game. FFG is seriously looking at it and he was fine tuning it. Unfortunately, he was committed so could only play a quickie. He pulled out another prototype (the same card game I brought to TrashFest.) You take turns playing heroes to locations to achieve the specific victory conditions of that location. Three locations wins. As always, I was the villains and lost badly.  For the record he needs to revisit his *new* three player rules.

clix

Heroclix- My friend Billy Motion showed up and while we waited for RobMartin  I convinced him to try out Heroclix. Now a 1/3 of my car was fabricated terrain for this but after bringing in and labeling all the games I had for sale I was gunshy about unloading it all. Billy chose a justice league team spearheaded by Green Latern to go with our locale.  Naturally I played the villains as Sinestro and some lackeys.  We had tons of fun throwing cars around and being knocked through buildings but in the end - he spanked me. Badly.  Emasculated I slunk off to make change for a bunch of games that I was selling. Where I ran in to...

AaronTubb

Aaron Tubb- Arron and I have been gravitating around the same game groups but never meeting. In fact we've been in the same game yet never met- I don't know how. Fate just conspires against us.  I looked across the table while I was BS ing  with Billy and saw his badge so I had to introduce myself.  He seems like a nice guy and frankly I have no idea how he manages to hold his own with the miscreants and misanthropes that are the swamp gamers. I've been out of touch though- maybe they've gone soft.  Kenyon and RobMartin roll in and we're all standing around Middle Earth Quest deciding which 4 of the 5 of us are going to play. Eventually I just sit down. Suddenly, everyone else does too. Guess who doesn't get a seat? That's right Aaron Tubb.

MEQ

Middle Earth Quest- The infamous Will Kenyon was Sauron, against Robmartin, Billymotion and I. I don't listen to any rule after five minutes so I wandered around for the 1st 15 minute grazing.  After that we went after Will Tooth and nail. The game was pretty interesting though way too slow for my A.D.D. It's a pick up and delivery game with a bunch of timing mechanisms tied in. All through the game I could hear imaginary clacking sounds as the gears of the game drove us to conclusion. Its saving grace is the combat system. Now that was fun. I made a bad call and got PWND.  It was early on though and I was able to recover. The trash talk was brutal and it kept my interest though the delivery started to bog down.  Billy and Rob were sure we lost the game and I was loosing interest fast but in a desperation move we attacked several minions and were able to force a confrontation between myself and the Witchlord. I had been watching Will's cagey card play all game and this time I was ready for him. Score one for the heroes.

heroscape

Heroscape- Another that *never* gets to the table but that I adore. I had set up a magnificent setup the previous year with two castles, between which a bridge  ran the length of board. I was set up before the large atrium and set off with spot lights.  It took both Frank and mines considerable resources- and it was a huge pain in my ass.  It was far away from the gaming and I was constantly being called over to it.

This year we played in atrium right next to the gaming and the setup while more modest was much more tricky. It was a deep ravine that had lots of cover and level changes. The three man game made for some interesting choices to maneuver. Best of all- I found a local Heroscape junky Jim Derst to share my addiction with.

I rolled out at 1 am.Niether Barnes (nor any Barnes groupies) showed up, though I did see lots of other friends that I didn't get a chance to game with (shouts out to Mark,Lyman, Randy,Richard,Dave, Ward, DavidChapelle, Erika, Tim , and Leon, Jay.) And thanks to all that bought my games.
