Review of 10 Hold the Line Scenarios

There Will Be Games

This is a reprint from something I wrote recently on BGG.  I'm posting it here for 2 reasons.  First I'm tired of looking at my last Blog with Howard picture  on the Front page and second I hoping somebody will be inspired to do this type of write up for their favorite modular tactical war game like  M44, CC:A, Battlelore or Battle Cry.  I think this maybe helpful for people to pick the best scenario for them.

I haven’t played enough games of Hold the Line to be an expert each scenario but here’s a quick review of many of the scenarios. For type of scenario I’ve divided them into battles and missions. Battles are scenarios where the winning condition is based almost entirely on destroying your enemies units. Missions are scenarios where a significant amount of victory points can be gained by capturing victory points or retreating units off the board. I have a preference for mission scenarios because I think they’re more interesting then straight up battles. American Revolution:

Long Island The Americans are numbered by at least 2 to 1 in this scenario. Not only that but half the American units are 2 MP Militia. When playing the Americans your job is to evacuate the American troops in good order. The British job is to destroy 7 units in 22 turns or less.
Overall Rating - 9 out 10. This is a fun scenario to play because it so different than a typical war game. The American player needs keep some units in line to slow down the British while retreating as many unit as possible each turn.
Type - Mission for Americans to retreat off of Long Island
Balance - Even
Most fun side to play - Americans
Time - 1 hour

Harlem Heights - The British Army is split in this scenario. They have a small force facing the American Army and a huge force at the edge of the board. The British player must decide whether use action points to fight with the smaller army or whether to get the larger army into play.
Overall Rating - 7 out 10
Type - Mission and Battle
Balance - Advantage Americans
Most fun side to play - Either Time - 45 minutes White Plains - The battle of White Plains is a classic battle between a larger attacking army, the British vs. a smaller defender, the Americans who are holding the better defensive position. Overall Rating - 9 out 10 a Classic Hold the Line battle
Type - Battle
Balance - Advantage Americans
Most fun side to play - If you like attacking play the Britain if you like defending play the Americans
Time - 75 minutes

Trenton - Everyone remembers the story of Washington crossing the Delaware river to surprise the British. While here is your chance to recreate that battle. In this battle the British or Hessians are very disorganized while the American army is ready to fight.
Overall Rating - 7 out 10. It's not that interesting for the British
Type - Mission for British to retreat
Balance - Advantage Americans
Most fun side to play - Americans
Time - 45 minutes

Princeton - This is the battle that follow the battle of Trenton. Washington continues to surprise the British Army and attempts to raid the British supply.
Overall Rating - 9 out 10. Princeton is one of my favorite scenarios.
Type - Mission for Americans to get to Princeton
Balance - Even
Most fun side to play - The Americans have to use speed to move into Princeton.
Time - 1 hour

French and Indian War:

Battle on Snowshoes - Rogers Rangers are surprised by the French and Indians. Roger Rangers only get 5 x 2 MP Ranger units and Rogers and they have to defend 2 VPs. The French and Indians have 14 units. Overall Rating - 9 out 10. This game is a blast. Probably my favorite
Type - Mission (2 VPs) and Battle Balanced - English. Even though the Rangers are out numbered almost 3 to 1 they’re awesome fighting the slower moving French.
Most fun side to play. Rogers Rangers by far
Time - less than 1 hour

Louisbourg June 8 1758: British have to make an amphibious landing against a French defended position. Overall Rating - 7 out 10. This is slug fest. I rate it slightly lower because strategy is limited.
Type - Battle even though there are 4 vps. Balanced - Slight edge for the French.
Most fun side to play - England if you like attacking, French if you like defending
Time - less than 1 hour

Montmorecy Falls July 31, 1759: Combined British land and amphibious attack against the entrenched French army around Montmorency Falls.
Overall Rating - 8 out 10. Kind of similar to Louisbourg but the British have more choices on how they’ll attack the French position makes this a better scenario. Type - Battle even though there are 4 vps. Balanced - Slight edge for the French.
Most fun side to play - England if you like attacking, French if you like defending
Time - less than 1 hour

Ste-Foy April 28, 1760: The French army attempt to recapture Quebec from the weakened British army.
Overall Rating - 8.5 out 10. I like this type of scenario a lot. Both sides have 3 command points. The French are stronger and must be pretty aggressive in their attack. The British need to balance fighting and giving ground. Type - Battle even if there are victory points on the board
Balanced - Even
Most fun side to play - French if you like attacking, England if you like defending
Time - less than 75 minutes

Bloody Bridge July 31, 1763: The Indians ambush the British player
Overall Rating - 8 out 10 Type - Mission - Ambush by the Indian player
Balanced - Even
Most fun side to play - French Time - less than 75 minutes
