There Will Be Games

I came into Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer expecting the opportunity to slay a god, which would be really cool, right?  It's the kind of thing you mention to your buddies at lunch the next day.  I think we can come to a consensus that slaying a god would set this game apart from the rest of the deck-builders being published.

But there's no god-slaying. In fact there's no gods in the game at all as far as I could tell.

Frankly, they could have included a god, maybe two, and god-slaying would naturally follow. That would have been majorly cool. Have a god card to one side of the other card piles (I'd make it a BIG card) and allow users to build up their combat skills until they're big enough to defeat him to win the game. As it stands now winning is a victory point kind of thing that ends when the points run out.  Ascension: Chronicle of the Pointearner.  Not a lot of punch to that.

I mean really, you could have left the victory points in the game. They're these little gems that you collect, so you could have used them as a game mechanic to purchase a mercenary or two (or -- ooh, here we go -- a relic) to increase your god-slaying numbers.  You would build your combat power via the deck-building concept that the game currently uses and use the victory points to finish the job.

It's a damn near perfect fit. When you lay out your cards and you have enough total combat points PLUS enough gems to buy a couple of hired guns or a holy hand grenade you GODSLAY to claim victory.  In fact I wouldn't even have used the word "win" in the rules.  Object of the game: Godslay.

"So what did YOU guys do last night? Me? I godslayed. Oh yes I did."

Is it asking too much to have god-slaying in a game called Chronicle of the Godslayer?
