Rants & Raves

It's not widely known, but there was a sequence filmed for the end of The Empire Strikes Back that never made it into the final edit. In it Luke, Leia and Lando, supported by a squad of Rebel troopers, try and rescue Han from the carbonite freezing chamber. The rebels pour into the room, taking up positions and opening up fire on the Stormtroopers stationed there. It's pretty spectacular. Several Stormtroopers get killed in the initial volley. But the remnants the arrival of an Imperial officer and a Stormtrooper commander rallies the rest. In response Luke...

Welcome back to another edition of the Snack Attack.  This is my own little, dark, corner of the Fort where I get to discuss something that I think everyone can relate to: food!  Well, I hope you can relate to it.  Otherwise you’re either A) Dead or B) Possibly a baby that still eats flavored goop from a jar.  In either case you’re probably not one of our readers.

So, here we are again for another volley. This time it's to talk about something I've wanted to do for a long time which is to review Conflict of Heroes on Shut Up & Sit Down. For all its shortcomings as a simulation, CoH is one of my all-time favourite wargames. I love its speed and its combination of mechanical and tactical conundrums. I also love the fact that it has tanks. After submitting my last two SU&SD pieces I ended up getting excited about something I'd never talk about in public. No, not that: photography....

Welcome back. This is part two of my "Ode to FFG". In this week's episode we will be looking exclusively at games that the company brought back from the dead. For a bunch of nerdy guys in Minnesota, their Necromancy skills are quite high. Yes, FFG really started making a name for themselves by bringing many beloved games back to the market. Some were really terrific. They were games that made you weep a little because you never thought you'd get your hands on them. Others were a little less well received....

The latest craze to come screaming round the corner with a roar of engines is Automobiles, which has taken my gaming group by storm. It's a deckbuilder that's been mutated into a bag-and-cube builder, neatly removing the fuss of shuffling and sorting that accompanies games in that tiresome genre. And with the addition of a board, some interaction and lots of excitement it's really quite the thing, the sort of game it's hard to imagine anyone disliking. Review over at Shut Up & Sit Down. We're not playing much else except...

As we all know, Fantasy Flight Games was purchased by Asmodee last year.  Well, as of April this year they are no longer a publisher, but rather a Design House within Asmodee.  They will be under the Asmodee North America umbrella or something.  So as a tribute to the FFG brand I thought it would be fun to run through their catalog and pick out their best games ever.
