Up Your Game

There wasn’t much time left this past week so we sat down to a game of No Thanks. This is a quick game by any standard (even by the standard of the two prior games of Biblios, a quick game all its own.) But in spite of that No Thanks presents a bit of magic in the play that I usually just refer to as “favored ground”. As far as I’m concerned favored ground is a seriously cool thing to have in a game, but it will take a bit of explaining to describe how No...

That house is not fit to live in. I don't know what it is with the ghost stories this Halloween season, but they're really clicking with me in a way they never really have. Much like how folks feel about The Babadook if they have kids of their own, maybe owning a house and having been alone in with so much space to myself makes these kinds of stories all the more effective. I don't much believe in the afterlife and I've certainly never witnessed anything to encourage me to even entertain...

JOIN US! If I'm going to watch just one movie in the Evil Dead series, I typically reach for the original. It's a movie I admire to no end. It makes no illusions to try and convince you that there's much of plot or that any of its characters are developed, it's simply out to drench each of its participants in an outrageous amount of blood. The final sequence is an utterly brilliant combination of camerawork and sound, made all the more impressive given how little of a budget it had...

There's just some things you gotta do. Don't mean you have to like it. As much as I criticized A Nightmare on Elm Street for its subpar acting, there just might be such a thing as a movie being more well-crafted than it needs to be. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre might be one such example. The dialogue is largely the fairly normal, throwaway kind of things that people say. By extension, the acting, while certainly not phenomenal, is entirely passable. It's shot like a documentary, further adding...

“Matching shirts.” Years back I spoke those words to the commissioner of softball for my kids’ local youth athletics organization. The organization had been merging smaller local athletics programs for the previous three or four years, growing in size and complexity because a big organization “is more suitable to building players for the High School teams.” When I indicated I didn’t really give a damn about the High School teams the commissioner was simply beside himself....

Overload, intended to be an advantage for the Shaman class, instead is one of the main factors in the class' inability to be competitive in constructed play, largely because it works against the essential tempo of the game.

Introducing Johnny Depp. I think it's safe to say that I share a birthday with A Nightmare on Elm Street. I was only two days ahead of it, close enough in my book. Going back to where I can remember things clearly and vividly, I was aware of Freddy Krueger. On my way to the Real Ghostbusters toys at the local department stores, Freddy was there. On the posters announcing the new arrivals at the video store, Freddy was there. Running the streets the first time I remember going...

Welcome to the Crank File. Whenever I don't have a game review to share I'll take a topic out of the Crank File and craft it into an article for your enjoyment. Sometimes these articles will actually serve a purpose and go hand in hand with an upcoming review. That will be the case with my inaugural edition. Boardgames come in all shapes, sizes, and flavors. You've got fantasy games, stock market games, sci-fi games, Lovecraft games, games named after medieval city games, zombie chow mein, princess fra diavolo, superhero jambalaya, Star Wars a...
