Arnhem Sector: Dawn comes cold and wet. Steady rain with no chance of a let up. The third air drop will be put off again. Future drops will probably be pointless, coming too late to affect the outcome. Today, it seems to the generals talking over their cups of coffee in the gray morning, will be the make or break day. In Arnhem, things are going from bad to worse. The beleaguered remnants of 1st Airborne suffer horribly. Their small area around the rail bridge is being inexorably squeezed smaller and smaller. The...

This is an analysis of one aspect of my new pirate game, Scoundrels. Also, if you want, sign up for a chance to win an early-release copy of the game. Hi, I'm Randy! I've never made a tabletop game before now.  I make video games, but that's a different beast.    Three things inspired me to try this physical game thing. One: I was spending entirely too much time staring at a screen. Two: a few years ago there were barely any "fun" pirate games out there. And three: I had...

In addition to the recent post on weird connections, I also have this memory of reading The Lord of the Rings trilogy while listening to The The's brilliant Mind Bomb.

This 12+ minute screencast is primarily for aspiring designers, not for professionals. This is a followup to "10 'need to knows' about game design" http://gamasutra.com/blogs/LewisPulsipher/20141020/228137/Video_screencast_10_quotNeed_to_Knowsquot_about_Game_Design.php The text of the slides follows.  Of course, there's a lot more to the screencast than this text. 11 MORE “need to knows” about Game Design Dr. Lewis Pulsipher Pulsiphergames.com “Game Design” channel on YouTube Original 10 Wasn’t Enough I started with 10 “ntk” But I thought of more than 10, so here...

In my quest to continue procrastinating rather than finishing up the writing of my PhD thesis (I have two weeks left!), I write yet another review. RPGs are hard to review because so much of the experience is contextual to the group. With a single player video game, or a film, at a certain level everyone sees the same thing, though they may reflect upon it differently. Consequently if you read a lot of rpg reviews on somewhere like RPGnet.com a lot are really book reviews. They outline the content of the book and...

In many respects the Storm Over System feels like an Ameritrash invention to me. When I compare it to other light war games it generates more fist in the air moments after a dice roll, and more slams of cards on the deck per hour than any of the competition. Whether you should get a Storm over game I guess really depends on whether that's the kind of experience you want from a light wargame. Storm Over Dien Bien Phu is the latest in a line of games using a variation of the...

A friend of mine once told a joke about Lancashire. He drove across from the Yorkshire border and got lost. There were no road signs, none! He drove for miles down back roads and highways and still none. And then he realised how stupid he had been. Of course, people from Lancashire cannot read. I live in Yorkshire, and we don’t like no Lancashires around heres. Still I think Brass, a game about the Industrial revolution in Lancashire (It started in Yorkshire) is Martin Wallace’s best game, and is in many respects the...

(In game terms rain means several things. First, there will be no air drop and no air support for the paratroopers. Also movement costs more unless the units are in column on a road. And most important there is a negative modifier to all combat.) September 19th 1944: The skies open up and the rains come and do not let up. The drop scheduled for today is pushed back until the 20th and the already soggy ground becomes a virtual morass.     The Red Devils...

Sigh.  I screwed up a short time ago and posted a video I'd already posted here, I apologize.  This is the one I meant to do. Slide text: Game Design: Discussing “The Board”Dr. Lewis PulsipherPulsiphergames.com“Game Design” channel on YouTube Describing, not DefiningBecause as soon as someone says “definition”, someone else will nitpick itGiven the loosey-goosey nature of English, absolutely clear definitions are nearly impossibleSo, I’m just going to talk about game boards, not “define” Why Boards?A board is a natural way to depict maneuver and geospatial relationshipsWhich are...
