It's good seeing you back Ken.

Goblins in Summoner Wars are all about the fast win. You usually won't have the strength to out-last opponents. Press the advantage from the start. Don't succumb to the temptation of turning your own cards into magic in the beginning - you'll run out of cards fast and eventually will have lots of magic to spare. Hold out until you can get champions like Mook who boost the weaklings. Oh, and Sneeks' Sly combined with Goblin Invincibility is a beautiful thing.

Great Dalmuti is based off of a 52 standard deck card game called Presidents and Assholes. May even be in Hoyle's book. It's a 'purse game' for me - along with Take 6. If I'm going to a party, or traveling, I shove small games in my purse as bordom insurance.

I introduced it to my ex's family, that is full of 'tweens' and aunties and such that are a race of Hearts-sharks and Spades players. They love it, and Grammie owned the kids in a ruthless, and regular fashion.

Good to have you back, sir.

You have just ably demonstrated why you don't need to piss about on the blogs - get back on the front page right away!

I own a copy of MEQ but have yet to play. Your comments, coming as they do from a fellow Tolkien fan, make me nervous about the game.

I used to hate Rap music but now it seems I can't get enough of it. Latest find is Madvillain - I'd recommendit is as a starting point for anyone who thinks they hate rap music :)

Welcome back, Ken! Your presence and good humor have been missed around here lately.

In my last game of Summoner Wars I came out swinging with the Dwarves and had the Goblins on the ropes until I ran out of steam and my buddy built up momentum. A total reversal of how both sides are supposed to play.

I love the combat/movement card mechanic in MEQ (just like I loved the combat cards in StarCraft) and it's a pretty fun adventure game for the heroes but playing Sauron has got to be the most boring, mechanical game I've ever played. It's just so dry, you never really feel like your spreading the forces of darkness or anything.

I've been loving some summoner wars too recently. I hear you about the goblins, they look so intimidating early/mid game, then a dwarf champion (like that exploding one) comes out and starts wrecking everything. Just save your money (most of your stuff is free) and make sure to bring out a champ of your own around the same time, and clear the hell away from exploding man.

Has anyone tried with more than 2? I played a three player game with my bro (his learnig game) and a friend against my 2 armies. Since you can wrap around the board a la pacman, it gives you so many more options when moving/placing units. Pretty cool stuff.

I meant to mention the card combat in MEQ as being the lone positive. I dug that, with the whole "resting" system. Very nice. I'd like to see that in a future game.

I recently got in a play of MEQ, maybe a month or so ago, and it convinced me to hold on to the game, which hadn't hit the table since like December. It was tense, close-fought, and very thematic. I do get the gear-grinding thing (particularly for Sauron) but I definitely feel like it needs some more plays to really get the feel of, and I for one am excited to get those plays in.

ROMA got _tons_ of play at Atlanta Game Factory, a lot of folks really liked it. Myself included, it's one of the better two-player Euros. I'd like to see this new one.

MEQ...man, that's one that hasn't held up well. I adored it the first four times or so that I played, gave it a great review, and then it never hit the table again. The thing is, there's some outstanding design work in it. As in, best on the market. But as a whole, I think you're right about the grinding gears becoming too prevalent and in the end it's a very, very mechanical game. But it's also very experimental, I think, with some interesting chances being taken and some very successful concepts- the card combat in it is probably the best that FFG has done to date.

Over time, I've kind of realized that there's a certain remoteness to the design. It doesn't draw you in, it keeps you outside of it and looking down over it.

I still think it's a very compelling game, but it's not one that I see reaching for to play any time soon.
