This past Valentine's Day, my wife had to take care of her hospitalized mother. As I was driving that Monday morning, our wedding song came on. What a Wonderful World. And my world was much better for three minutes.

I totally agree with Mikoyan

These days I find myself listening to hip-hop, funk, and country more than anything.

These are all things I completely ignored when I was a teenager (ironically, most of the hip-hop I like best came out at the very same time I was actively ignoring it). However, I still have my alarm clock set to a buttrock station where I know every song from the intro riff. I still dust off a Zeppelin record now and then. It all goes in the mixer, man, and something comes out the other side.

I like classical music, I'm not sure I would list it among my favorites though, although Beethoven's 9th comes up there. I'm not sure if I'm wierd or not but when I discover new music genres, I tend to not shove other music out of the way. I still listen to metal, some punk, reggae, etc. I'm not generally one to say that if you like rap you can't like metal especially when you think of how much music is derivative of other forms.

Its not all perfectly correct, as some stuff you can like even though you aren't ready for it yet, and later come to truly understand it on a different level. Other times you just like stuff because you just like it. The other day my wife and I were watching a kids cartoon and there was a scene with a car running out of control through the town and instead encountering the traditional two men maneuvering a giant pane of glass, the car crashed through two men maneuvering a giant sandwich. Neither of us could explain why that was the funniest thing we had seen in quite a while.

I can't quite put my finger on how gaming fits in with all this. It is not as though I wasn't playing Ameritrash as a teenager in addition to other games which came to dominate. So why the dearth of younger people here? I guess I played those games but never really considered myself primarily a boardgamer, more a roleplayer, who dabbled in other things occasionally (board games, computer games).

That's a great heartfelt piece.

The bonding we go through to really attach ourselves to any piece of art is complex and personal. It's usually applicable to a time and place and that helps give it meaning for us. But where we take the art from is entirely arbitrary. Obviously historical events that either yourself or loved ones have gone through will resonate more easily but at the same time traditional songs like Barbara Allen or Poor Wayfaring Stranger are written from such universal places that the meaning and intent of the song is as clear and becoming now as it ever was... all it takes is for the person to listen to or play the music during a personal time to make that happen. Our stereo's aren't limited to a time period.

Instrumental music is even better as it can cross the language barrier much more easily and as a result doesn't age as poorly.

One of the great features of recording is that it can be used to make time and place disappear, it allows you to have a zero to one relationship with the artist, pure and disconnected from many of the societal judgements that normally cloud one's vision. If I can't see the artist or the artists fans I'm not going to judge them based on all these bullshit extra-musical factors that usually include fashion and cliquish mentalities. I used to think the Femmes were better the Springsteen too, funny how time does that.

That said, I got into Bach thanks to an awesome ColecoVision game called looping. Great game, perfect music. So maybe your right after all.

Ah that beautiful Texas Instruments SN76489A never sounded better!
