That reminds me of that situation when a guy tried to stab me from behind and I bludgeoned him with my oversized ballsack. That happened on an airport while a group of hot stewardesses walked by. I could have made sweet loving to all of them, but I stay true to my wife, who is a supermodel and waited outside of the airport to pick me up in her Lotus Elise. (I drive a Ford GT.)
I met them, that's all. Never slept with them. I see what your doing and you got me wrong. I never slept with a woman I didn't love Schweig! ... just to set the record straight. I was responding directly to Jeb's somewhat sad comment.

She has a beautiful smile, I'd sleep with her and do my best to give her a great orgasm... in the old days of course, not now. She did nothing wrong and neither did he. We've all been just as superficial and she should not date a guy that into magic because it's not her thing. Fair enough, no issues. Calling her a bitch is going far.

Not all beautiful women are like her, some like nerdy guys, I've met plenty of them.

Her only crime from what I can tell is being a bad writer, but the internet is filled with those.

The story struck me very viscerally. I was very into professional-level Magic back in Finkel's day. I'll spare you the gory details, but I was a nerd. Flash forward 15 years: a beautiful wife, 3.9 kids, two awesome jobs on the résumé, and this story brings all the angst back in a rush. Not only was she dissing (and dishing) on a nerd that OKCupid set her up with, but a Magic nerd, and not only that--he was the very best of "us".

I get it, she's a troll. She got 500,000+ page views for Gawker--mission accompished. But it really dealt me a blow.

I'm not out here saying she's ugly--she's not. I'm not saying I hope Jon gets scads of pussy--that's crass. What gets me is that I am nice guy (like Jon), who is/was very into Magic (like Jon), and despite the fact that he is more successful and handsome than me, he still gets dismissed by pretty girls because he's a nerd--like me.

I welcome your comments on my fragile psyche, but I won't be reading them.
I would not be surprised if she's a one trick pony intern editor.
Early in the comments, there's a link to her article for Salon about how her dad's slavish Ayn Rand Objectivism blew up her childhood. Assuming any of THAT article is true, she's not a 1-trick pony intern; she's a 30ish grad student writer that seems to have embraced--to the point of cliche--this new sort of digitial exhibitionism that passes for personal writing. I find that those Salon.com "Life Stories" regularly amount to little more than "how I stopped being the addict I became after other people fucked up my oh so happy life."

The writers think cataloging the wrongs (real and/or perceived) done to them and presenting them for the world to see will bring some sort of catharsis. What I find missing in so many is any actual introspection/self-examination, which means, to me anyway, it's really just another form of "look at me!" adolescent outburst. The result is the weird paradox of anonymous exhibitionism--"that might not be my real name and you have no way of knowing what may or may not be true, but look through this window into my life."

The two "personal stories" I've seen from this chick have that same flavor to me. But, taking the OKCupid story on its own, I think Frank's nailed it when he tagged her as thinking she'd be all Sex in the City and didn't work out that way.

On an unrelated note, that Dahmer play is supposed to be a big deal at the moment among the hipster entertainment crowd (at least as far as the Washington Post is concerned).

You're right. In the grand scheme of things, this story doesn't matter. I'm not going to join in the meme-ing of her, nor am I about to personally attack her. But that's why I'm also talking about it here, on a website devoted to leisure activities, of which Magic kinda sorta figured into the article.

Besides, most discussions and arguments held on this site can be stopped with a "Who freaking cares?" However, just like people enjoy debating whether Terrinoth is a worthy setting or whether Game of Thrones is really going anywhere, I found this to be a nice diversion from my shitty job.

I was wondering when this would show up.

I read this on Twitter as well, and thought she was just a shallow bitch.

The reason why it's a big deal is that she named him, gave a Heidi-pology, and then undid her nominal mea culpa with the line that Sag pointed out.

What pissed me off is the fact that she chose to vilify him for one thing: a fucking hobby. It didn't matter to me what the hobby was, but she chose to hone in on it because she thought that "making fun of nerds" was still coo-el.

I wonder what would happen if roles were reversed and the champion wrote the article and lambasted her because she has an interest in Ren faires. Same fucking deal. I could easily see women coming out and castigating the guy.

I would not be surprised if she's a one trick pony intern editor.

I've still at a bit of a loss to understand what it was that turned her off?

If it was simply because he was a game geek then he is better off without her. She doesn't have to like game geeks, but implying there is something wrong with being a game geek is childish. We all have our interests - what makes any of your interests better than mine?

The Dahmer play was a bad plan for a first date, but it doesn't actually say anything definitive about the guy.

And publicly naming and shaming him is bad form, but if he rises above it and refuses to comment, he should come out of it looking a lot better than she does right now.

She's superficial but she actually didn't seem to have had a problem with his looks. And criticising superficiality by being superficial is hypocrisy, too. Anyway, I'm always surprised how (other) nerds react to things like this. I assume several script kiddies are hacking her phone now or have already done so... In my opinion ignoring is still the best way to retaliate. I agree with uba that the author got exactly what she wanted out of that article.
That's what people always say that when someone does something outrageous and gets 15 min. of fame, but I think this case is different. For one, the shock value doesn't come from anything she says about Magic or Magic players, but the awful things she says about one specific person. Magic barely enters into it and she doesn't even rip on the game or its players.

The second problem is she's not some strange person like Chris Crocker or the WoW freak out kid. She's also not some blogger who routinely says outrageous things. She seems to be more or less a serious writer. I guess if she wants to go down the road of being Kathy Griffin of the geek scene, that's fine, but she's going to need to do better and be funnier. Her tone was pretty malicious.

Agreed. I think the unintended consequence is Jon +1, OKCupid +1, Gizmodo +1, Alyssa -1.

Sure, she got a lot of hits, and therefore made a name for herself, but now she has to follow it up. And she can't just keep flaming people, or we'll all become deaf to her trollish ways (not that I plan to follow her anyway). Besides, now if potential dates google her, her awfulness will be at the top of the search page. And the bad thing about the internet: it never goes away.
Of course she is being provocative. You don't get picked up by the Washingtin Post, CBS, Forbes, the Village Voice, and Wired by writing, "I went on a date with a guy no one has ever heard of. It turned out he was a big sports fan, and all his friends were also into sports, so I decided I didn't want to see him again because I didn't want to be a football widow. I wish he had put this information in his on-line dating profile."
All that does is show how in the toilet modern journalism is. Nearly 40 years ago, the Washington Post brought down a president. Now it's relegated to calling out a guy who's good at card games for going out on unconventional dates with people he meets on the internet. In that light, she should be thanking her lucky stars the guy she met was Jon Finkel, not trashing him for living. Without him, she would have no story and she wouldn't be picked up by such glamorous media outlets.

Seeing her picture makes it difficult not to go post on her blog and bring her back to reality right quick.

I originally assumed she was playing in the major leagues the way she judged this successful and accomplished gamer. Talk about throwing stones from a glass house.

She should carve an inch off that nose and get that massive overbite fixed, then she can talk like she's [s]a living and breathing Tier 1 deck[/s] the cat's pyjamas.

How do you figure? I figured she had to be a smokin' hot babe to have the audacity to shit on some guy who has a fairly prolific series of accomplishments for simply being an avid Magic player.

It's not like they're not both public figures. If it was some random FAILBLOG banter or something, I'd agree, but they're both public.

For real. That's the part that's stuck in my craw. Now, granted, she may have just been trolling for hits- but then why NAME the guy? This is a story you can shre with yor friends NOT THE WHOLE FUCKING WORLD!!

She's shallow and mean. More so (I hope) in the article than in real life, as that's what the Internet does to people. She saw herself writing as Carrie Bradshaw or Chelsea Handler I am sure, and instead managed to piss off the Gizmodo target demographic in a huge way. Lessons learned all around I hope.

That being said, I commend the guy for being honest and not hiding who he is. He could have easily chosen a different play to go see and not mentioned the Magic shit. He could have easily avoided any of this stuff and she might have liked him a bit more...but eventually she would find out when he was playing tourneys every other weekend. So good for him for just being who he is and trying to find a suitable girl. He just happened to find the shallowest fucktard in pool.

What's curious is that she says this:
Maybe I'm an OKCupid asshole for calling it that way. Maybe I'm shallow for not being able to see past Jon's world title. I'll own that. But there's a larger point here: that judging people on shallow stuff is human nature; one person's Magic is another person's fingernail biting, or sports obsession, or verbal tic. No online dating profile in the world is comprehensive enough to highlight every person's peccadillo, or anticipate the inane biases that each of us lugs around. There's no snapshot in the world that can account for our snap judgments.
This is the go-to part of the article. This is where she reviews all she has said and brings home the moral of the story. We all make snap judgements, and that we can't expect them to be as detailed and robust as we'd like. She even mea culpas, saying that she's as human as the next person, and that she succumbs to shallow opinions as well. This is a pretty solid summary of life, and the article. This was the closer, and she should have stopped right there.

But she just can't leave it alone:
So what did I learn? Google the shit out of your next online date. Like, hardcore.
See? I'm funny! LOL!!! I knifed my entire article, but I got a cheesy punchline to finish with.

Had she ended on the prior paragraph she would have sounded like she had some insight. Instead she comes off like a 15-year-old that's still hoping for the quarterback to call. Unforced error.
What's causing all this ruckus, I think, is that it is stirring up long suppressed self-loathing amongst successful geeks. We really did take over the world, but a sneer from a pretty girl can still ignite those long ago feelings of rejection and awkwardness. I say this as a guy with a loving wife of 11 years, 3.9 beautiful kids, and two awesome jobs in my résumé.
There is a little of that, but here's where the wheels fall off the argument:

"I later found out that Jon infiltrated his way into OKCupid dates with at least two other people I sort of know, including one of my co-workers. Mothers, warn your daughters! This could happen to you. You'll think you've found a normal bearded guy with a job, only to end up sharing goat cheese with a guy who takes you to a one-man show based on Jeffrey Dahmer's life story."

Infiltrated? Warn your daughters? Is this normal adult behavior? To investigate the personal life of someone you've rejected and then write about it on the internet? These women are all on OKCupid and they all live in the same area. Are they really all that surprised they end up dating the same guy? If she "sort of knows" these people, they probably all have traits he's interested in. That means OKCupid would send them his way. Her attempt to take the anchor of "he plays magic--what a nerd!" and balloon it into "he's cyberstalking me and my friends--run away!" is bad form in a public setting.

This is more than a sneer, it's a cruel public shaming that comes right out of a junior high drama. I'd think that to make a point she shouldn't reveal herself to be a crazy person. Or secretly a thirteen year old.

Pretty nasty piece. She could have anonymized the details a bit (even if shallowly) and survived without quite so much crass assholiness. Only he and she had to know 'which' Magic champ he was. But no, her ego-suck required that she slag him as publicly as possible.
No doubt he is pretty lucky to have dodged that one. Who knows? He may get some more-suitable geek-grrl dates out of the attendant publicity. :D

But she never gives any real reason for not liking him because of Magic, as if we should all know why he makes for an unsuitable partner.
I don't know this Finkel character and I'm not all that into Magic, but it's not like he's some filthy bearded 500 lb grognard talking about his last MMA tryout or how he's wanted in Japan for beating up a guy on the subway (which is totally what I hear at my FLGS from some of the Magic players). I'm sure he has his tics, and everyone does, but because he's really really good at something? Uh, sure...

Heck, he even down-played it on their first date. It sounds like it was her who pushed the issue. Sure, the guy wanted to see a one-man play about Jeffrey Dahmer, but whatever. Her turnoff was he was a Magic celebrity.
