The former :)

Anyway, it is all good to me, I like VPG games, I just hope this doesn't mean the nice GMT versions don't stop coming.

Knowing how to program and operate a laser cutter is a job skill. Plus a person with a commercial design degree who knows how to draw pretty pictures and who has hands on experience in how those pretty pictures get turned into a product has an edge in the job market over someone who only has a commercial design degree and can draw pretty pictures.

How so? The OP just mentions thicker counters, which is a step up in quality, sure, but not really opening up a world of innovation. Unless of course this means they can have odd shapes or something, which might help.

I would think knowing how to mount a board, design a box, and construct a useful insert would also be useful skills.

But anyway, any improvement in their games is a welcome one. I foresee a need for LOTS of solitaire games in my near future.
I wonder why they are doing this now. Is the GMT partnership not working out?

Seems to me that a box and a mounted board are what they need to jump to the next level. Their counters have always been pretty acceptable for me.
VPG is a "college classroom extension laboratory." A laser cutting machine provides greater learning opportunities than boxes.

Your VPG Announcement link redirects to a seriously kickin' skateboard design. I'm guessing that wasn't your intention.

I am personally taking credit for this move. I'm sure I had nothing to do with it, but I'm taking credit anyhow.
