I interrupted a week of film going at the Sydney Film Festival for Cabin in the Woods. It was worth it. I wouldn't say it's "genius" per se, but it's a lot of fun - and didn't deserve to be held back from release for so long.

Cabin in the Woods ranks in the top three of this year's movies for me. It was the one movie that I wasn't even sure if I wanted to go see. Glad I did.

Cabin in the Woods is very much genius. very smart horror and hilarious at the same time. I also loved the opening title sequence over the coffee machine with the blaring music. So awesome.

Solo dice combat owns. It's quick and dirty, Talisman style.

I recently played Dungeonquest 3rd Edition with the newer combat rules, and I still like them fine. The downside is that they take a little too long to explain. But I don't really like the original combat much more, since it seems particularly senseless, even in the world of Dungeonquest. I don't blame FFG for wanting to figure out a better way to do it. And the upgrades besides the combat are almost all very good. It's certainly a nice-looking version.

The solo dice combat might be the best of them all.

FYI: Banditos' rules are clear regarding heat placement - it's done after an attempt. That IS one thing that's clear. But "speeding away" is nebulous as fuck, as is "in the trunk" and some other shit. And the first time we played, we missed that you can't re-import your weapons (even concealed) into the US. So, there's more impetus to go and do a string of robberies than just go down to MX, steal shit, and then come back up.

I'll be reviewing it soon as well, but I have to say....this is a "love it or hate it" game if there ever was one. For the first time (or at least that I remember) we had a player get up, say "fuck this shit...this is mind-numbingly bad" and go home. I mean, we played MUNCHKIN. We played HALO. And this guy left because the game was so bad, to him. But one person ~LOVED~ the game which took me by surprise because she's way more a Tikal person.

I disagree, I kind of liked it, but the game's final "Superfly Circus Score" is going to suffer from a couple guys who gave it really low scores.

Me, I think it's a strong seven.
