"You seem to have liked Red November so, hopefully I won't regret my blind purchase when it finally gets here."

I bet 10 bucks that you will like it.

"I caught the version before the Space Alert edit...and WAS wondering if Simon was insane for not immediately diving for Space Alert.

You did miss Ghost Stories, which is my favorite co-op game so far (Space Alert may win out.) I've always liked co-op games, but...we've gotten an amazing wave of them. It's like Co-op is the new Meeple or something."

Yeah, I was basically writing the report on the pictures I had, but I didn't get to take a picture of SPACE ALERT, because I mostly shot these at the end of the exhibition and the game was already put away.

I did know nothing about GHOST STORIES. I caught up on all the games that were demoed at our booth pretty quickly, but for the others (COH, WORLD CUP) I had to plan to try them, because I only got one "free" day at the exhibition and GHOST STORIES was absolutely "not on my radar".

Co-op was definitely the hot new "mechanic" at this year's Essen.

By the way, I saw Derk.

Of course we will ALWAYS need another game about Chinese Horror Movies.

great report Simon. You caught a few different games than I did, so we have a better overview of what's around.

Great job, Schweig!

Oh, and at least Barnes is still more identified with Fortress: Ameritrash than with his paying gig.

I love that burning gnome. I have to figure out a way to use him as a holiday card or something. I pre-ordered Red Novemeber just based on Faidutti's description in his blog. I found his very "tactful" comments about why the game was changed from a Russian Sub to a gnome sub too funny. You seem to have liked Red Novemeber so, hopefully I won't regret my blind purchase when it finally gets here.

Regarding Dominion, whenever the first two sentences used to describe a game include something along the lines of, "The objective is to get points," I just move on. And I really just shut down, when people start describing a game's objective in terms of executing a mechanic. Not one person I've talked to about Dominion, has said, "You're trying to build the biggest dominion." I'm just guessing here because what everyone does say is something like, "The objective is to get cards and build a deck to get the most points."

Oh, and the homepage of THE WORLD CUP GAME also links to the Gameshark review, so the designer should know about the pimping going on.

"SUPERB report, Simon!

Did you mention to the World Cup designer that Mike Barnes had been mad pimping his game?"

Thank you! No I didn't mention that. Maybe I should have? At least Barnes review is linked to from the BGG site.

"You work for a distributor or game store? Which one?"

Its funny because everything you say there makes me not want to check it out. I'd rather do a quick Magic draft instead. Its interactive and has depth to it, but its also fast and addictive. To each his own I guess. :)

Seeing blurbs from Barnes and I on the Neuroshima Hex stand is really amusing.

One question. You work for a distributor or game store? Which one.

There has been an ongoing discussion among the hardcore Euro fans about the demise of Adam Spielt. They are the only company I've dealt with that really understood how to pack stuff for overseas shipping.

While it was much easier to order from Germany in the days of $.45US Marks, there are still games that I want desperately enough to place an order every now and then.

Battlestar Galactica will end up on a lot of "Game of the Year" lists, I'll wager.

I was demoing Age of Conan Thursday and Friday, so Andi definitely played it with me if he participated in a demo on Thursday. The game is very good and should be released in Europe in January, and in the US a few months later.

Conan is actually controlled by one of the players, not just by the game itself. The game is played over three ages, and each age is measured by four of Conan's famous adventures and consists of a variable number of player turns. At the start of the game, and later at the start of each adventure, the players bid for control of Conan. The Conan Player then has the option, at the start of his turn, of moving Conan closer to the destination of his adventure (one of the Hyborian world's many countries and regions), using Conan to lead one of his contests with the other player controlled kingdoms, or just raising hell in a region controlled by another player. Tough and very thematic choices throughout.
