The FATCast is recorded live in Uba’s basement by the amazing Engineer Al. Some of the features in this episode include Nexus Ops (HALL OF FAAAAAME!), King of Tokyo, Star Wars: The Old Republic, LOTS of listener email, DuckTales, Before Watchmen and the creative process. Josh manages to continue his streak of talking about Batman EVERY EPISODE. Our controversial question to set the comments aflame: what's the most overrated AT game?

I love me some Nexus Ops-- and for the record? That;s the last time I share the creampuffs Richard gave ME with you forgetful, ungrateful bitches! I was the only "brave" enough to start eating those things. Yup, I'm gonna go with brave.

  • avatarDukeofChutney

nice Cockney accent. Play Frozen Synapse, it is awesome.

also whilst i like Nexus ops, Cosmic is better, but both are better than Dezkent

  • avatarclockwirk

Not updating on iTunes yet. What's up with that?

I dunno, my only memories of your tummy and AveryFest was that we had to take a lot of breaks during TI3 so you could go offend Southern sensibilities.

No idea about the iTunes thing. Hopefully it shows up soon, I think there is a slight delay.

I dunno which will be more shocking; my "English" accent or my pick for most overrated AT game...

  • avatarVonTush

    Great episode as always.
My pick for most overrated AT game would be Arkham Horror.

  • avatarJosh Look

I love AH, definitely a great game, but a bit overrated, no doubt about it. If I had to make a top 5, it would be in there. Hell, why not, let's do this.

    5. TI3 - Another game I really like, but not even close to being the best game ever..in fact, I think I feel what Matt feels for CE on this one.

    4. Axis and Allies - Straight up detest this game. I sort of get angry when I think about how there's grown men who've played it hundreds of times already and they still want to play it. Is it scripted? Maybe, maybe not. I do know that if you don't follow the script and you're opponent does, you're going to lose. Unless they suck at rolling.

    3. Arkham Horror - I do really like it, don't get me wrong, but it's not "all-time favorite game #1" material. Loses points for being co-op. While it's a slightly lesser game, I'll play Merchants and Marauders over AH unless I'm seriously wanting some Lovecraft action.

    2. Any C&C game that isn't Battles of Westeros - There's two types of people who cite any C&C game that isn't BoW to be the best in the series: Idiots and those who haven't played BoW.

    1. LISTEN TO THE SHOW - Sorry, I require much more out of a game other than the choice to either go right or left...or occasionally up. It's legacy is ENTIRELY built on nostalgia. Sorry. No I'm not. Color me Euro, I guess.

iTunes store updates once every 24 hours. If you have subscribed via iTunes when your library will update depends upon your settings.

Good episode as always. I agree with Josh Talisman is probably overrated (its a 6 or 7 out of 10 so not hideous, just not that good), but not Cosmic. That's a slam dunk 10/10.

That was because Southern cuisine, delicious though it might be, is greasy as fuck and my stomach bascically drew a line in the sand and said "HERE! And bo further!" (it helps if you say it in the voioce of Cpt. Picard)

  • avatarMattLoter

"bo further" sounds like an adult male performer's stage name.

Hopefully I remember this through ConnCon and Billy gets stuck with the new nickname of Bo Further! Or maybe, Billy Further...

Also, looked at our iTunes reviews and someone calls me an alcoholic homo! Username is like "NoMoreHomos" or something. I love the internet! Go rate us 5 stars!

    Bo further?

    Oh... fuck me.

Bo Further has a tag line now too!

That's not what I- ah fuck it. I think I'll shut up now.

Josh, Let me tell you why you are completely wrong about Talisman. Talisman is a game that does not reveal it's depth until you have played it enough times to intimately know the cards and how they can interact with each other in interesting ways. It is not a game for you younger folk who need "instant" gratification. At first it looks like there is limited choice, but that's only when you don't know what you are doing. Oh, well. . . what should I expect from a guy that doesn't even know that Martha Washington is an AWESOME character written by Frank Miller and drawn by Dave Gibbons. She appeared first in the GIVE ME LIBERTY mini-series and then in MARTHA WASHINGTON GOES TO WAR. Both are huge fun, and yes I will lend them to you.

  • avatarJosh Look

    Awesome, you're the best, Al.

Thanks Grandpa. That line has been used for every game ever invented. If you don't like it you just don't get it. C'mon, that's what they say about Small World too.

Talisman is a game you have to fall in love with when you're a kid. At that point it has a familiarity that lets you enjoy it more. One of my buddies is big into the stone cold euros but he loves Talisman and when I asked him why he answered, "because . . . it's Talisman." Anyone coming to the game for the first time as an adult isn't going to be knocked out by it even if they play fifty times.

My first play of Cosmic Encounter was two years ago and let me tell you, the game sucks. I appreciate it was avant garde when it came out, but it's been thoroughly rolled by its descendants. Truly an overrated game. I'd wager 90% of the folks on this site would disagree with me, but, well, that's because you all think it's a game that does not reveal it's depth until you have played it enough times to intimately know the cards and how they can interact with each other in interesting ways.

Bo, what do you think of Cosmic?

    S.

  • avatarbillyz

I think Cosmic is awesome- conditional to who you play it with: take Loter for example- Matt is the consummate huckster/sheister. He's the kind of guy that'll convince you that sticking your finger up your own ass is a perfectly novel idea, he'll then suggest you pay him a small consultation fee for his services- and you'll find yourself agreeing with him.

What the fuck does Josh Look know? This is a man who thinks being a Greek Canadian is somehow comical... I just answered to Bo didn't I?

  • avatarKen B.

Cosmic Encounter is fucking incredible, and I didn't even play it for the first time until the FFG reprint. No nostalgia there. Still better than 99% of the games on the market. Yeah, there may be some group dependency at times, but if you're really not the type to fit into my Cosmic group, we really don't need to game together all that often.

Talisman? I agree it's overrated. I dig it, but mostly as a good adventure game to play with kids. Often, funny shit happens, but also as often, it's kinda a big grind.

Was I just dis-invited to a game group I'm not invited to?

    S.

  • avatarKen B.

LOL...hell yeah! That will show you, huh?

Just to be clear, that was the "royal you." If you played Cosmic with me, Sag, you'd go home and make love to the cardboard afterward.

  • avatarDeath and Taxis

My group of six only started playing Cosmic when it was re-released by FFG. After 2 years it remains the most requested game to play in our group and everyone now has their own copy. You are playing with the wrong people Sag.

First of all, that's "Engineer Grandpa" to you, buddy. Secondly, I love the way you scold me for saying something that I never said. Very Orwellian.

But I do think I understand what you're saying about Talisman. I was learning to play Chess last night and when I wanted to move my pawn I could only move it one space or two spaces. Where's the fun when the choices are so limited? What a stupid game.

  • avatarSagrilarus

You were going to say it at some point in the future, so I called you out on the crime beforehand. I think that makes me Dickian instead of Orwellian.

For both Cosmic and Talisman my main issue is that I never get emotionally invested in my position. "This is me these are mine" never comes to fruition. I feel like a spectator. For Cosmic I get started but some of the cards can throw an earthquake through the game and pretty much hose anything you had going.

I think that's the heart of my disappointment in both games. Unfortunately it's one of those things that's hard to define, so it's hard to provide support for my argument. Talisman gets a B- from me. Cosmic is a solid C.

    S.

  • avatarMattLoter

I think Cosmic CAN be a great time and I've had a lot of fun with it. I just think it's incredible overrated as the coming of the boardgame messiah. There are a ton of games I'd rather play most of the time yet many people laud Cosmic as one of the undisputed all time greats. I give an A-, still great and almost everyone should own it and play it, but not even close to touching my top 10 or even top 25.

There is the added element of it's historic importance, which is indeed worthy of note, but just as I don't see a lot of people going all boners for Monopoly or vanilla Risk much, just cause it was an important step and groundbreaking design doesn't mean it hasn't been supplanted by newer and more compelling designs.

    Also, this...

  • avatarNotahandle

Good podcast guys. One minor critical observation though, when one of you interrupts, could the other please stop taking a little quicker. It's a good informal format, but occasionally it's hard to make out what's being said.

Hey, at least he didn't call you a degenerate starfish molester.
Given the 'how do you rate' questions, you should consider summarising with the ever popular 'n out of 5' format. Rather than stars you could use starfish...

  • avatarMattLoter

It's hard to stop talking when everything you say is SO IMPORTANT!

  • avatarNotahandle

Ha ha! You know, if you yanks need a specialised beaver cutter, you must be wussies. All you need is a steady hand and balls of steel.

  • avatarMattLoter

My balls are quite delicate. I'm quite happy to have things that way.
