On the Beach - Tow Jockey Five Second Review

A nuclear war has destroyed the Northern Hemisphere. The residents of Melbourne Australia wait for the creeping cloud of radiation that will kill them all to arrive. The movie reflects the fear of the age in which is was made, 1959, but the movie retains its power and relevance because it is about how people deal with catastrophic disaster more than the disaster itself. Some give in to debauchery, some live in denial, some go crazy, and some wait for the end with acceptance. The tone of the movie is one of melancholy rather than rage, regret at lost opportunity rather than anger at folly. Stanley Kramer, the director, is at the top of his game here.

Never seen it, but sounds like a great movie. I only have netflix streaming though and you know this isn't going to be in any redbox. Damn, where's a brick and morter video rental when you need one?

I looked to see if it was playing on TCM any time soon but alas no.

It's a great film; one of the must-have post-apoc movies. IIRC there was a remake of it starring Armande Assante that was mediocre but was closer to the book. In fact, I read the book because of seeing the movie. Not a bad read.

I read the book a long time ago. Never saw the movie though.

The movie does contain one of the biggest dick moves in cinematic history. Spoiler of a sort ahead...

At the end when the submarine crew decide they want to go back home do die rather than die in Australia, and the captain says he's going with them and leaves Maura...what a douche!

    1. Either stay there with her so she doesn't die alone or...

    2. Take her with you and let her live for a few months longer. What the fuck, Dude, you're the ranking officer in the US Navy, who's going to tell you no?

    What an ass.
