So if you remember from a ways back, I posted a blog post about starting up a Road to Legend campaign with some strangers. They were a good bunch of guys and playing with them was fun, but not as fun as playing with my brother-in-law and friend.

My bro-in-law finished his freshman year of college and went home for the summer and was determined not to come back. Well he's back. My campaign with the strangers became quite erratic due to lazziness, my moving, them getting kids ready for school, etc. So I called the campaign off.

I think my friend, bro-in-law and I all want to get back to playing Descent, but should we start a new campaign since I got Tomb of Ice? We weren't very far into our old campaign. But any progress is some progress in a game that spans a long time. Or we could start a campaign at the silver or gold level.

So how about you guys? How are your campaigns going? Heroes give up in frustration at the difficulty of copper level? Give up because you couldn't get people to commit to the time? Or are you having a merry old time dungeon crawling?

Our group got crushed very quickly in 2 successive campaigns by a tremendously well-versed "optimal move"-type overlord. Every move he made was calculated for maximum damage and minimum exposure. Then we changed overlords and the "optimal move" guy became a party member--for me, anyway, his play style reduced some of the fun quotient--it sort of turned RTL into Age of Steam [a fine game but it rewards the "actuary mindset," which is something I'd like to avoid in a dungeon crawl. As we drifted into other games to take a break from the tension building around that particular situation, I think he got caught up with having a kid on the way. So, as such our party kind of came to an overall halt.

From that experience, though, I managed to develop 2 new regular local gaming partners [both with a taste for at least light-to-medium wargames, which is a HUGE plus for me] and at least one of whom will quite likely develop into a decent long-term friendship to boot.

So, I rate RTL a "5" for a gaming experience but a "9.2372" for positive life impact. ;)

Well I am definitely not that brutal of an overlord. I play to win, but I don't spend that much time optimizing my moves. I usually make a few strategic blunders in every session.

Just played my first game of DESCENT: JITD today. That's a really good game. I should just set up some sort of monthly withdrawal for FFG to save everyone some time.
