Looks like the game was actually designed with the two buys rule but was changed to make the game more casual. So that's why this "variant" plays so much better!!!

It sounds like the designer needs to be interro . . . uh . . . interviewed here on F:At.

What do people think of the culling variants?

Three plays of this in the last two days and I think there's definitely a need for a higher point total for the game. We have Rise of the Demons in the mix now and we could have played a three-player game to 40 points with ease. I had gotten out ahead of my two boys and, though they were starting to gear up, I was able to coast across the 20 point finish line before they could give me a run. The spells would have had some time to get in the game.

The expansion is nice. Not stunning, I wouldn't have bought it myself, but it's nice. More critters to choose from is nice.

More points... hmmm. tough call. I know that we had one game go on for 45 minutes! It was a 3 player game to 20. I'd never seen it take so long. We had the expansion in there too and there were two cards handing out cursed dice. So while it might work you could run into some extraordinarily long games in certain scenario's. Maybe it was a fluke but still...

I scored 8 points in a turn with a demon tonight so 20 seems like a very short number.

When we were playing to 12 scoring a couple of pawns in the first turn was a big deal -- a sixth of the points needed to win.

Now we're playing to 20 and demons score 5, some others 4. The expansion allows you to subtract points from opponents, but you can throttle up even more with the expansion now.

Easy enough to change.

I've yet to try the "buy two" variant, but I also don't think the game really needs it. I've probably played the base game of Quarriors around 50 times and think that the one buy works just fine. I'm still able to build a nasty bag O' dice when its all said and done. I can certainly see how the two buys would work well, I just haven't had to use this houserule yet.

I tend to use a mixture of all the dice that are available, but it really just depends on whats been dealt. Sometimes the spells on the table aren't that great and don't see much play. Other times the spells are all awesome and they go quickly. It all depends on the starting cards that are dealt.

The only real variant that I play is to make the game a "best of three" competition. I use the exact same creatures and spells for all three games. This forces you to really try out all the different combos and you get much more familiar with the details of the cards.

I might give this variant a go in the near future, but I don't think its necessary at the moment. I'm still having a pretty good time with the base game. For those that have bought the "demons" expansion - is it worth it?

How? The fancy little scoreboard only goes to 20?

I replace all my scoreboards and paper money with high-quality poker chips.

Any recommendations about how to add in the expansion? It seems if you do it just randomly, most of the time you won't even be able to use the damn corrupted quiddity, and what fun is that? Anyone have any preferences they can share that work well? Seems like if I just increase the percentage of corruption cards, I'll just be seeing a lot more of them and a lot less of the base game cards...
