without digging out my netrunner cards, if I can remember correctly the key thing that made netrunner cool and unlike magic was the balance in the design that equalised the resources.

drawing a card= taking an action= earning one resource point to spend later

It stays that way for most of your game. Magic never manages to balance these things.

It truly struck a balance between the three.

Personally, I found this, while elegant, to be overall a negative. Imagine, for example, Cosmic Encounter where, whenever you can draw a card, you may instead get a guy back from the warp, and vice versa as well. Suddenly, all the card-drawing aliens blend in together with the ship-restoring aliens, and everything becomes more homogeneous (Lucre in its original Eon implementation did this a little, actually). The fact that the difference in Netrunner between a card that says "draw three cards" and "gain three bits" is lessened is not, to me, a good thing about the design; I hate that you can actually CALCULATE the value of each card in terms of bits/actions/cards.

The thing that ironically saves it is that there thankfully is still an imbalance between the three resources: gaining three actions is, for example, way way way better than gaining three bits, and not even for flexibility reasons but for speed reasons (letting you lay down and advance agenda before the Runner has a chance to interact/run).

What's more worrisome is this talk of "factions". That means there may be some rules changes to generate synergy between faction cards and to create hooks to sell booster packs. Uh oh! Don't have enough cards for your "Anarch" deck (come on, where are the Brujah and Ventrue)? I guess you'll need to buy three of the "Anarch n' Roll" booster pack coming out next month!

The LCG format is a sham, just because it's a finite, fixed purchase doesn't mean it's not a crock of shit that they sell you only SOME of the cards you need. Remember LOTR? There were factions in the base game that sucked and were almost unplayable without boosters, as well as card effects that were practically useless without buying more cards

I'm not really sure what any of this means. The LCG format means that I can buy a pack of cards that cost about the same as a starter set of any CCG and know that I'm getting a full playset of whatever is in there. And the fact that they're fixed means that I can choose to either buy or not buy, depending on whether there are relevant cards in the set or not. I've skipped about half of the current cycle and I'm not experiencing any issues with needing cards that I'm somehow now forced to buy. I used to play three or four different CCGs at the same time, and I can say unequivocally that this system is superior in every way.

Netrunner, even though it was a CCG, was one of the most balanced and accomodating ones ever published because you were rarely in a situation buying packs that you got cards that were useless. It wasn't like Magic, where if you were a Bruise player you were screwed if you got a white rare, a pair of green uncommons, and several red commons. The synergy was in the cards, not in factions or divisions.

I know it's already been said, but Netrunner was only really balanced out of the starters, as I recall. Constructed was pretty degenerate. But I think what you mean by balanced was more on the purchasing side? If so, then I don't really see how you can defend blind buy on the premise that you only get stuff that was useful while calling fixed, known purchases in the LCG model a crock of shit. I don't think you can have it both ways.

So I'm guardedly excited, obviously this is a day one purchase but I think the question as to whether this is going to be a Cosmic/Wiz-War class FFG reprint or a Rex/DungeonQuest one is already answered. And the answer is troubling.

But hey, there may be some good news in the updating...this is a game that's never really had a significant update or revision, maybe FFG will do it some good.

I actually think they've done pretty well with their card games. I'm pretty excited about this.

Put me in the optimistic camp. I loved that the two sides played very differently from each other. Something that other CCGs of the time lacked. I'm sure that the core mechanics of the game will remain mostly untouched and the game will get the graphics update it sorely needs.

Now that I'm not at work and can look more closely at the art: art is AWESOME. I don't wanna hear any bitching about the art. This is the best I've seen from them since Cosmic.

Yeah, I think SFunk hit it pretty well on the head (Where do you play AGOT SFunk? I thought I was the only one around these parts :) re FFG right now. Personally, I want to like it on one hand, but then on the other hand the Star Wars LCG is coming out too, and I already play AGOT and a couple others...I just don't know that there's room in the wallet or the schedule

Re: OMFG! FFG announces ANDROID: NETRUNNER

You can put me in the optimistic camp too, but the difference between CCG and LCG is the first letter and nothing else. Putting a couple of A+ cards in an expansion and filling the rest of it with B- cards is no better than blind booster packs.

Would it kill you to put the complete game in the first box?

I too wonder how many different LCG lines both FFG and their customer base can support. Now or soon we'll have:

Warhammer Invasion

Star Wars

Lord of the Rings

Game of Thrones

Cthulu ?

Retail stores probably love them, as they provide repeat customer traffic, and the price point is low enough that they have a smaller risk of consumers defecting to online merchants.

There are two problems with what you're saying. First, not all cards should be "A+". Part of what I love about deckbuilding is using second tier or off the wall cards instead of always running a power deck. If every card had the same utility, there would be no real challenge to deckbuilding. Also, the first letter is the entire difference. Having paid up to around $50 for a single card in my CCG years, I think there's a significant difference in knowing that the most I'll ever pay for a playset of anything is about $12. Plus, I can just walk into my FLGS and pick up the pack that has the cards I want instead of gambling on booster boxes or scalping on ebay. That's huge.

You still end up buying a shitload of cards you don't really want or need though, just to get that one card.

AWESOME. Really looking forward to seeing what they do with it. Looks good from the preview, though having the card title under the picture is a bit impractical.
