For something different, one of my guilt pleasure flicks:

The Great Train Robbery.

Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland and Leslie Anne-Down (who looked *good*) in caper flick set in 19th century England.

It's awesome.

This is the first title that came to mind when I saw the thread.

Not a movie, but I recommend the BBC show Hustle. The characters are grifters who specialize in the long con and do their fair share of heist episodes as well.

Since we're also talking cons there's the Sting (1973) with Paul Newman and Robert Redford.

Re: Best heist movies?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned THE HOT ROCK with Robert Redford. Great flick.

I'll say again, try Tower Heist if you like this kind of thing

I mostly asked to see if there were older classics I hadn't thought of. My wife suggested Th Hot Rock as well.

Surprised no one has mentioned A Fish Called Wanda yet.

Dammit...sorry about the embedding, but watch the trailer.

When Engineer Al mentions a movie my wife tried to find for us to watch, I know we are on the right track.

Re: Best heist movies?

I have to agree that Heat is just a great, solid film from a master. There's a great deal of technical filmaking gems in there, that are perfect because they are so subtle. The attention to detail is amazing.

However, my favorite all-time heist film is also one of my top 5 films of all time: John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle with Sterling Hayden. Noir at it's noirish best. So gritty and tough, it raises your testosterone level with every viewing.

The best I've seen recently is Korea's The Good, The Bad, and the Weird. The title turned me off initially, but I'm glad I gave it a shot because it was extremely entertaining. It barely fit into the heist category; not much more than The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but since there is a train robbery, I'm counting it.

Re: Best heist movies?

I was just reminded of another great movie: Kelly's Heroes. Sutherland as "Oddball"? Perfect casting.

"How to Steal a Million.". Hepburn and O'toole, fun and breezy. My favorite older one.

Is there a difference between a caper and a heist movie?
