It's not the direction I'm dying to go with the game but based on BGG people are all in for civ specific powers. I might get it anyway because it's such a good game with a talented designer.

I just don't like being routed in certain directions right when I start the game. The whole point is that what characterizes your civ is the advances it takes.

While the meat of the expansion is surely the Civilizations, there are also elements in there that could be used without them. Although I would not recommend buying the expansion if you think you would dislike the civs :)

I do however think that most fans of the game, would appretiate the civ part, if for no other reason than the added strategies that are opnened up and the 10-fold increase in longivity :)

There is really an insane amount of posibilities added to the game. While it does come at the cost of pushing you tad in different directions, I think it will be worth it for many people.

Thanks for linking to the news... Its still just a small peak into what this beast holds.

Hell yes! Been playing this game a lot since I got it from Coolstuff a couple weeks back (thanks to whomever posted the deal of the day!).

Between this and Merchants and Marauders, Marcussen is probably my group's favorite designer, so they'll be stoked to hear this.

Is this every civ gets its own board with its own thematic advances to choose from or a specific set of new advances you have to buy in a fixed order?

I can't go into details yet, as they are unnanounced. But something like that :)

SUPER excited. Way more civilizations (and leaders) than I thought would come in the box. Looks cool. Wondering how those pirates come into play.

I'm more excited about the culture specific stuff now that I know there are a lot of them. Seems like they might sort of lock you into a strategy, so the idea that there would be 5 cultures and I wouldn't have choices kind of bummed me out. It looks like there won't be a "Well, guess I'm taking Rome and have to fight all game!" situation.

I want to like Clash of Cultures more than I do. On the surface this doesn't sound like it will change much for me. I'm one of the weirdos who doesn't understand why "real" civilizations are such an appeal; so you can have Vikings fight Chinese in a fictional landscape? For me the addition of "real" civs instantly adds to the unreal nature of the game (see also: Sid Meier's Civ, which I like DESPITE the real civilizations, not because of them). Beyond that, none of my problems with CoC are things that can be solved by the addition of more military units.
