Academics meets anime

I have to share this, because I don't know who else to share it with.

I'm at a political science conference, professors and graduate student galore. Dour suits, ties, or just sport jacket and tie, etc. What is absolutely fantastic is that in the exact same hotel Sakura-con, the anime convention of the NW, is also going on. The mix of the two groups is comedy gold. It's good to know that there will be some folks yiffing somewhere down the hall while I do a final run through of my presentation and read the other papers on my panel.

Talk about letting the freak flag fly!

That sounds a lot, lot better than stat conferences. Our highlight is ice cream.

Buy a copy of this: aya.shii.org/2011/09/17/european-philoso...magical-anime-girls/

"Author Junji Hotta has blessed the world with “Tsundere, Heidegger, and Me”, a tour de force of European philosophy… in a world where all the philosophers are self-conscious anime girls. The books went on sale September 14."

I was at a conference once that was adjacent to a new age or yoga group. The weird thing is, there was only one day of overlap, so one day the shared spaces were filled with dozens of people wearing matching white robes and turbans. If I didn't know better, I would have thought I had stumbled on the Silver Twilight Lodge, but they don't wear such colors.

Ok, I just had to look up what the hell "yiffing" meant. Thank you inter webs for that bit of knowledge I could have lived without.

Then I thought...how the hell does Gary Sax know what that meant? You been dressing up as a Texas Armadillo and not telling anyone, Gary?

Last month I went to Vegas for my annual "big one" trade show. There was a pizza convention and a doctor's convention there in the same hotel at the same time.

The only people wearing costumes were the hookers.
