Recently I was on the local library's website and stumbled upon a dvd called "Alexander the Great and the Macedonian Empire". "Cool", I love the history of the Ancients and put a hold on what I thought was an hour to an hour and a half documentary about the subject.

After a few months waiting it finally showed up and lo and behold it's a 6 dvd set lecture with a course guide booklet. What the shit? I was going to return it then thought, hold on I can listen to this at work and if it's boring I could take it back. Two discs in and I'm really digging it!

The lecturer is Professor Kenneth W. Harl from Tulane University and I find his presentation clear and engaging.

I am seriously jonesing to play Command and Colors: Ancients again.

I recently downloaded and listened to one of The Great Courses offerings.

The American Revolution and the lecturer was Allen C Guelzo. I found it very informative and his delivery was entertaining. Listening isn't going to make you world renowned expert in the subject but is good for an overview.

It was 12 hours all told and I think was $40 on itunes.

I have a lot of the TTC lectures especially those on early and late medieval history. They are very good.

Another good source is iTunesU or whatever its called. These are great video courses filmed at college and they even include the extra work and essay assignments and it's FREE.

Let me repeat that, if you want to learn Quantum Mechanics from the expert guys at Oxbridge, it's FREE.

Yes sorry I didn't mention it in my original post but this too is from "The Great Courses" series. I'll have to look into what else they offer, at my library.

Take care when purchasing from The Great Couses, as their pricing is all over the map. A lecture that costs $160 will bundle with one that costs $180, and the bundle price will be $40. Make sure you check every bundle for the lecture you're interested in.

My next one is the Asian Steppes, and I think I get Byzantium with it for $60.

Their WWI was excellent, High Middle Ages, Lincoln's speeches good as well.

Never pay full price for TTC every single one of their lectures goes on sale at some time over the year. They have a sale on ALL the time and rotate the titles throughout the year.

If you're a fan of astrophysics, Neil deGrasse Tyson has two video lectures for The Great Courses. My Favorite Universe (a 12-part series) and The Inexplicable Universe: Unsolved Mysteries (a 6-part series). I've seen the former, it was fun. Not as enlightening as Cosmos, but Tyson is the kind of science teacher everyone wishes they could have.

actually nevermind, I misread the thread title. It's what lectures are you LISTENING to. If it was What Lectures are you HEARING, I'd qualify.

Years ago they were all $250 and up, and they were getting pirated into oblivion on the Internet. They were sending C&Ds to people all over the place. There was a file on Pirate Bay that had 30GB of mp3s in it. They finally figured out that if they got their prices into a more reasonable place they'd get ten times the purchases and make the same amount of money, especially since most of their target audience has jobs and doesn't mind spending a dollar or two on quality.

I first ran into them when I bought a big-ass CD sleeve full of their stuff at an Estate Sale. I think I paid about $10. Didn't know what it was but the titles sounded pretty doggone interesting and no one else wanted it, so I got it at the opening bid. I've listened to all of those except the one on the Vikings which seems to keep missing the boat. I've purchased about half a dozen since, my Ma does too and then we swap.

All that said, their pricing still remains an enigma. Granted it's an enigma at around $50 instead of $250, but still very strange. "Buy one, get a second 175% off!"
