I don't understand how the Decent system isn't appropriate for SW.... isn't it just a basic movement and line of sight system that you can throw anything on top of? The actual abilities are somewhat arbitrary right? Unfortunately I don't have a group that could stick through this to make it worth it... and I wanted team play.

None the less, it's hilarious to me what this thread has turned into... it was supposed to be a thread about whether or not our brains play tricks on us... whether or not our brains (for the sake of hype or a setting we love or aesthetics) convince us to defend things we may not otherwise like very much... maybe even at all? I felt it happening when I was reading about IA and I've felt it several times before. It was also about how aesthetics play into it the whole thing... how they can cloud our judgement. Sorry I didn't spell it out but that wouldn't have been a fun post to write.

Now... here's what I'm thinking (although I'm sure the thread is a wash anyway so it doesn't really matter).. IF aesthetics and setting can have such a drastic effect on me that I'm willing to defend things I haven't even played or experienced for myself.. is that bad? Cleary these things are important and I'm being heavily effected by them. So perhaps, since the emotional response to them can be so visceral, perhaps they are the most important, the most primal part of gaming. The mechanics... well who gives a shit? I know that's extreme... but it's just a thought experiment.

I felt the fear after I saw the price tag. Holy shit! $119 at my local store! I was expecting about $40 less than that.

Where do you live? Supposed to be $100. Your FLGS is probably leveraging the Star Wars brand.

Bull Nakano wrote: I was initially very interested in IA, but then I examined what it is and my playing habits and decided it's probably not for me. The all vs. one , the campain play, the $10 single mini expansions, I don't want any of these things. Skirmish? I can already play the WotC game. I own descent 2, I like it but it barely gets played, this would just keep it company. That said I'd very much like to try this out sometime.

Now, these are all legit reasons. You must at least willing to invest in the campaign. For Skirmish there are way better games.

He's in Saskatchewan (Canada). I've seen online stores in Ontario selling it for $110! Others for $85, which is about what I expect from online discounters. Some stores were probably hoping to gouge a few customers before Christmas, and might lower their prices in a few weeks.

$119 isn't too bad then (in comparison to the U.S. price) considering it's a local store and the weakness of the Canadian dollar lately.

Ooh... well, still much better prices than Indonesia.

I was expecting a price comparable to Descent 2nd Edition, maybe $10 more. But $40 more?? Craziness. That sticker shock took it from, "hmmm, maybe" to "not a chance in hell."

It sounds like Hasbro exercised their exclusive rights to Star Wars boardgames and got involved (rumors of course, but makes sense since I don't think anyone bought that IA was a miniatures game first).

There's been some talk about the cost going up and what's interesting is the online retailers are pricing at 25% off rather than the usual 35% off. There was one online retailer that cancelled all preorders for the character packs because the revised pricing to them was higher than what they were selling it for.

There's a chance where, like BSG, the price will go up with subsequent printings. This might be the game where we see FFG follow GW with a $115 or $125 pricetag.

Given the long time that it took for X Wing inventory to stabilize, online shops might have theorized that they gave away margin on that product selling at the usual 30% off SRP and are now trying to maintain better margins on this product. That said, X Wing had much lower price point as well.
