Largely irrelevant, but I thought the font choice and color palette were curiously close to those of Dungeon Twister.

I've never liked Starcraft - I didn't think the mechanics fit the theme of the video game very well - but I think the Starcraft engine as applied to the WH40K universe looks fun. I also like how the warp storms are used as mobile barriers during the game (possibly as a way to mitigate a smaller play area?). One of my gaming buddies owns and has soured on Starcraft and its expansion so I'm going to try and convince him to sell his copy and buy this instead. ;)

As far as the price goes...It just gives me an incentive to sell some stuff to build up the funds to buy. Darn...

EDIT: Also, pretty awesome that they went specific with World Eaters, Craftworld Iyanden, Ultramarines and Evil Sunz. Even without bridging into other races there's still three chaos gods to address, other Craftworlds Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Wolves, then the other Orc Clans. I'd love to be able to play this with all four chaos gods in a giant chaotic chaos maelstrom.

Expansion opportunities, but I think wise ones. They can release new types of marines or whatever by having another chapter with its own set of unique cards but doesn't need a new set of minis. Or they can release a full expansion and add whole new races or units.

They could just release card packs for existing models...But they won't.
And as a minis guy, I'd be frustrated that the Nurgle dreadnaught isn't covered in puss filled boils and modeled in a color of green somewhere between lime and neon.

Good, 40K lends itself to boardgames well; epic grimdark struggles and all. Moreso than Lovecraft, or whatever bastardization of Lovecraft is being applied to games nowadays.

EDIT: Look at the box. Just look at that fucking box.

Applejack wrote: Just discovered this Youtube video. I think I can see why it's so expensive. Each of the four factions has six unique miniatures, in addition to the hive cities and manufactorums used by everybody. That's twenty-six different types of minis. And they all look extremely detailed, much like the Relic busts and very much unlike the Horus Heresy minis.

That game is fucking beautiful. We'd never get it to the table, but holy shit, would I love to.

I used to own starcraft, but sold it due to lack of ease of playability, and lack of players because of that.

Do you suppose the dice will help mitigate this where starcraft used cards? I'm curious what people who've actually grokked and successfully conned people into playing think what the potential is here.

The real hazzle about Starcraft is the amount of different units. If you haven't played the PC game, getting a feel for the different units is almost impossible in the first game. And the ressource system is also a pain. I love it because it mirrors the PC game quite well, but I hope they do something more akin to Runewars with this game.

^Yes! Great comparison if they Runewars-ed it it would be perfect. I'm still keeping my copy of Starcraft but it could use the simplification. I didn't like the resource system much either.

I dunno. Played the original starcraft video game quite a bit. The ffg rulebook made me want to cry since I knew I couldn't get anyone else to bother going through so much effort to play it.

Naah, I've seen too many cases of "got 2 carriers but no carrier card!", I don't think knowing the pc game helps much. You just need a good teacher teaching the concept & dynamic of the game instead of just the rules.
