Talisman - The Harbinger

A new small box expansion for Talisman.

This game just keeps expanding and expanding. Crazy.

Have they come out with an expansion for the expansions yet? Surely it can't be too far off.

The funny thing about this most recent edition of Talisman is that back when it came out all the haters on TOS were saying how outdated and crappy the game was.

"It's just roll and move! No real strategy or choices to make whatsoever." Comments like those were common to hear.

Some put their support behind newer games like Prophecy and Runebound that "fixed" Talisman...hoping that one day they would take over the fantasy adventure scene. Wrong. That gravy train just keeps on keeping on. Fucking Talisman will outlive us all!

I still don't have Woodlands...or that other small "fan" expansion that came out. To be honest, I would actually kind of be OK if they just capped it off and said "finished".

But...this actually sounds cool.. I like the Harbinger idea, that could be as cool as the Reaper.

I think several of the mechanics of The Harbinger look great.

1. Four decks that represent global changes
2. Alternative board spaces are nice
3. Creatures, Followers, and Enemies that have interesting effects:

Witch Cat (Follower):
You may replenish one Fate per turn.
+++
If you you fate to re-roll a die and roll a 1, you are turned into a toad for 3 turns.

Demon of Sloth (Craft 2):
While you have this card as a trophy and roll a 1 for movement, immediately end your turn

Talisman is a random FFG game I picked to only buy the small box expansions to see what would happen. So far I've been happy with that decision and wish I had done it for Arkham Horror. At least for Talisman, all the small boxes add enough to the game without me feeling like I have to buy a larger table. I still get about as much character variety and it helps keep the games knife-fight tight.

Unless you play every couple of weeks or so, I don't see the need for any more Talisman. The variety on offer is already staggering.

You don't need Woodlands. It adds too much needless complexity. Like Dragons did. City, Highlands, Dungeon and all the small boxes are great. Skip Woodlands and Dragons.
