Okay, so I have the original Z-Man edition (2008 I think). That one is version 2.5, correct?

I suddenly have a wild hair to go all-in on this. Assuming I'm right about the 2.5 thing, should I just buy up the 2.5 armies? (All I have at the moment is the base set and Babel 13.)

Alternatively, should I just go ahead and go full 3.0? It wouldn't be the first time I've bought a game twice, and I have no problem putting some extra cash in Portal Games' pockets.

What say you? Buy all the 2.5 armies, buy all the 3.0 everything, or just take a pill and lie down until the feeling goes away?

I'm actually really interested in this as well...so please don't say 'Get the iOS game.'

Way back when, I was deciding between NH and Manoeuvre and ultimately I went with Manoeuvre... a game I love the more I play it. In fact, about 5 months ago I actually whittled the shelf down to 5 boardgames and Manoeuvre made the cut. I realize that I prefer games that have a low variety of components and that I feel like I get better at over time (TITAN, Britannia, Manoeuvre, Empire Builders, etc) and I think NH is still a good candidate for this.

(here's the old thread: fortressat.com/forum/32-trashdome/86609-...ima-hex-vs-manoeuvre )

I'd like to know a little bit more about the differences between the editions. I imagine they play the same, so share thoughts on the more shallow stuff. Which has the better board? Art? Base game package?

I think this is entirely subjective and up to your opinions on the art. Some prefer the 2.5 black borders and art style and some don't. For the record I absolutely love the 3.0 board.

The 3.0 mode of 2v1 is really awesome as well, although you could do that in 2.5 too.

I'd recommend going through the BGG art of each version, thinking about whether you would mind using 3.0 expansion armies with your 2.5 stuff, and then make a decision.

What about the iconography? I found with 2.5 it wasn't quite clear sometimes. Any changes there?

I mean, yeah, I should jut look at the dang pictures.

I have a complete 2.5 set. I've never played 3.0 so I can't comment on that. I will say that I can absolutely recommend going all in, since every army has something to like about it. You'll definitely get some that you don't enjoy as much, but again it's personal taste.

The one thing that DOESN'T sit well with me is that the more recent army expansions are printed on cheaper, thinner stock, so they don't have the same fit and finish as the earlier work.

If you want to start more slowly, Babel 13 is the one must-have. New York is one of the best factions, in my opinion.

If I'm looking at these boards correctly, it appears as if the 2.5 board has the factions fighting within a junkyard or something. This scale seems odd as that would put four HQ in essentially one area?

The 3.0 board looks like it takes place in and around a city. This makes more sense. I know it doesn't matter, but this would scale the pieces out to unit level as opposed to the individual level of the 2.5 junkyard.

Am I interpreting this right?

The city makes more sense but the junkyard (or apoc rubble) is more fun by a country mile. Play NH Lite on iOS to get a feel for it. for my money 2.5 from Portal was the best one, as it also included the mad bomber and alabama I think they were called. but it is probably hard to get now. I also loved the 2.0/2.5 cover with the huge machine...I dunno, I owned three editions at different times plus babel and the other expansion and sold em all. if i bought again it would be 2.0 or 2.5 but i like the simpler, some would say poorer, artwork.

I have 2.5 with Babel 13 and The Duel. I'll part with the whole thing $45 shipped.

3.0 has a better board It depicts a grey ruined city and looks way cooler than the mess on the 2.5 board.

2.5 has a better box cover, its amazing how some people react when you pull out the box of 3.0 with its techno nazi on the cover.

2.5. imo has better tiles. I just prefer the thick border art style, though the 3.0 tiles are slightly thicker.

imo i had a 2.5 expansion with my 3.0 game. Stop being OCD and just get the expansions, it's just art style.

I like the city map. I like the solo puzzles. Indifferent on the 'Techno Nazi'.

Looks like 3.0 is the one for me.

Are there only two expansion armies out for it (for a total of 7)? Do they all fit in the basegame box?

yes, the box is a about 5 times deeper than it needs to be. You will hold everything they publish for the game in that box.

I went ahead and ordered 3.0 (the Z-Man version, since it had an extra army and was cheaper).

Let's face it, I knew what I waned to do.
