I'm going to a family reunion this weekend. My mom's side of the family is mainly Italian-American and somewhat eccentric, so there will definitely be good food and interesting conversations. But most of the planned activities (hiking, swimming, visiting a wildlife refuge, playing bocce) will be ruined by thunderstorms, leaving only boardgames. On a similar occasion many years ago, I got a six-player Mythos game going, including my grandmother, so I know that my powers of persuasion will be sufficient to get some AmeriTrash on the table. My dad always brought Acquire to these get-togethers, and was consistently able to get three or four people to play.
These are reasonably intelligent and creative people, so I'm not going to wring my hands over entry-point games. Instead, I am focusing on games provide opportunities for interaction without heavy strategy or rules. So I'm bringing Cosmic Encounter, Sons of Anarchy, and Werewolf. And maybe the Paranoia card game, as long as we just play with three clones each. Anybody try something similar in the past? I will let you know how this turns out.

Zooloretto, Settlers of Catan would be good too.

I've had great success with Ca$h and Gun$, Survive, and Dixit just recently.

Not a fan of Dixit, but I totally get why people like that. We just did Triassic Terror (a little too much probably), Survive, and Cash/Guns. Was a riot. Cash and Guns is probably the best party/gateway game ever.

It's been ten years or so since the last full reunion, so in my mind, I was visualizing 30-35 people in the house, sitting or standing around talking. How could I have forgotten the kids? I sort of knew there were be kids there, but I was picturing just a few, and they would probably rather play outside. No, there were nearly 50 people at the reunion, including about a dozen kids ranging in age from 3 to 11. And once it started raining that night, we were all crammed in the house together, so no room for boardgaming.
However, it was still a nice weekend. I went on a four-mile hike in a hilly forest near town, with seven of my relatives. On Saturday afternoon, we had a huge bocce ball tournament, and the rain managed to hold off until shortly after the final game. My team nearly won the loser's bracket, but the same team that knocked us out the first time did it again.
