I'll likely play it today and report back. Initial impression is to just get the standard one. I can already see where this is a more stripped down, faster playing game than Queen's Gambit, so for what the game is, I don't think it's worth the extra $20 for a couple more minis. It just ain't that kind of game. This is, however, coming from someone who owns Queen's Gambit.

I had a "chat" with Hasbro customer service. She said she thinks it's a store exclusive but she would write me via email and confirm.

The board is different, too, Josh, or at least I believe it is. The 20$ extra is for a better board, the 2 ships, and the Death Star. I'm in it for that Death Star. Really, I guess you could get a Micro Machines copy of each (I had two of three when I was a kid, probably on eBay).

I guess. It is Star Wars, toy appeal is huge to be sure, but I just don't think there's $50 worth of game there. $30 absolutely.

Is it weird how seriously I'm considering getting both just so I can have upgraded components and the fun, full color box? Anyone want black box / standard components if I did this?

Fuck it. I'm getting both.

Side question/thought...what does this release do to the grail status and value of Queen's Gambit? Does anyone think it will cause it to come down in value?

I don't think it will effect Queens Gambit prices at all. This appears to be a much more stripped down game in terms of both gameplay as well as components. KInd of like the new version of Study in Emerald coming out - its different enough that I don't think many will see them as competing. If anything, it may increase awareness of Queens Gambit.

I don't think it will budge. I think that this being such a smaller game in both physical presence and in design, I don't foresee anyone giving up Queen's Gambit in lieu of Risk.

Three key things that make this a substantially different product than Queen's Gambit and why it's won't effect the price much:

-No 3D Palace
-3 fronts instead of 4
-No Jedi/Sith entering another battle and just wrecking shit

Those are three huge things, even if the game feels somewhat similar. My favorite part is taking Obi-Wan or Darth Maul into the palace and just destroying people. One of the few games where a Jedi feels like a Jedi.

Two folks told me they talked to Hasbro reps and the rep said Black Edition was going to be Amazon exclusive.

Also, Queens Gambit lets you blow the shit out of Jar Jar Binks and his people.

That's likely to be my most missed aspect from QG. I do think that they did the right thing by not pretending that a spatial element was important in the Vader/Luke fight. Until one side took out the other, Jedi movement was pretty pointless in QG. They do have this bit where Luke can either take Vader out, getting you only 3 bonus cards as opposed to the 4 the Imp player gets for killing Luke, or you can try to redeem Vader for 5 bonus cards. The opportunity to redeem Vader is pretty rare and I can see where that might make for some tense moments. Do you just kill Vader is you get the chance, or do you wait it out hoping you get the Redemption card, opening Luke up to be killed while you wait?

The Death Star is a beast, btw. Look out for that thing.

I actually think the card play might be tighter in this than QG, actually. The Anakin cards made for obvious choices. Not using one to move Anakin was a wasted opportunity. Here, not so much. Yeah, it's got one fewer battle going on, but each side cannot afford to completely ignore any one of them.

Amazon rep confirmed Black Series could be showing up "at any time". Mentions sometime "this week".

I'm an idiot. I JUST realized now that the game board is supposed to look like a TIE fighter!

I'm already kind of fed up with the black series deal. I hate it when companies make it hard for me to purchase their products. I don't want to check Amazon all day for the next couple of days to see if it's up for the two minutes it will be available before selling out. They should have done preorders on this or something.

I'll probably just get the $30 edition and see what happens with the black one.
