Games for five players: Family and medium weight

So I we have five people living at home, ages 12-52. Can you think of any games that play in an hour that are reasonably fun and not just party games? All that comes to mind is Through the Desert and maybe Daytona 500.

Similarly, my four brothers (ages 34-52--crap we are getting old) will probably play some boardgames. I'm looking for something not too heavy but trashy and fun, like a five player version of Incursion or something that plays in 90 minutes. I'm tempted to buy Shogun or Wallenstein just for this purpose.

I don't think you'll get Shogun or Wallenstein done in an hour with 5 players.

Condottiere is really good and plays fast. You can change it up by getting the FFG version and the Eurogames rules. There's a thread on BGG about which parts of the FFG edition to keep and remove to play the Eurogames version. Then you've basically got two rulesets that give the game a different feel.

Also, I hear Cosmic Encounter is OK.

Shogun/Wallenstein is a dead end. That is not a great game to break out on non-gamers. However, I am selling a copy in my current sale, so maybe it would be a great idea after all.

China, El Grande, Adel Verflipticht/Hoity Toity, Medici, Acquire, Railways of the World, Survive! with the 5-6 player add-on, Smallworld, Broom Service...I'd point you at that stuff.

When playing with this kind of group, I think it's important to consider what the goals of a game are...they need to be something very concrete and relatable without any kind of confusing gamer crud lain over them. Like making money, having the most of something, killing somebody else's stuff, taking an item from here to there.

If you want something light and co-op we've enjoyed Forbidden Desert with non-gamers. We like Puerto Rico a lot. 7 Wonders has been fun in that setting, too. If you want something trashy, we like Betrayal at the House on the Hill.

El Grande is 1.5 hours, probably. I'd say Stone Age but I'll get shit on for that so forget I mentioned that one.

Banditos would be a good, über trashy game for 5 in about 1.5 hours. IIRC it plays 5. Been a while.

5p Heroscape would be just fine. Expensive though.

Cyclades would be a must-have for these specifications.

Five Fingered Severance is one I love but I am probably alone in that.

Lunch Money (shaddup, Michael) is the definition of trashy. Think it goes 5.

Settlers with the player expansion, but maybe plays too long.

Small World was a good call by Mike.

Escape: the Curse of the Temple is bad ass, but you need the 5th player.

Triassic Terror never lasts more than an hour wth 4, and I love it.

Epic Spell Wars would fly.

City of Horror is PERFECT for this group's criteria. So is Spartacus. The Adventurers (Chac) is a great choice, plays 6.

Junta: Viva El Presidente, though, would be my #1 choice, because you can create life-long enmities.

ACQUIRE rocks cocks. Definitely hits the notes you mention. Easy to teach, plays quick(ish).

STAR WARS RISK: THE CLONE WARS is really good with five. Same goes for RISK LEGACY, my god, man. What a set up.

Second CYCLADES. Tricksy endgame in that one.

Can't WIZ-WAR get played by 5-6 now?

Puerto Rico would be my top pick. 80 minutes about

Make sure to tell the 12 year old to stop picking craftsman like a retard

I really need to lose that word.

I'm glad to start replacing it with Welshman

Definitely Wiz-War for the brothers (need expansion for 5).

For the family, maybe something like Kingsburg or Specter Ops. Hard to know without knowing their personalities and tolerances for games. Paperback is good if they're into scrabble. I'd do Bohnanza, Pandemic the Cure, King of Tokyo and Lords of Waterdeep to try and cover the casual spread. Bring a zombie game if anybody is into that.

The best answer anyone will give you is El Grande.

Four family members played Ingenious tonight. My wife complained bitterly because my son told her about the extra turn rule halfway through the game. She also snapped at everyone to hurry up. My 12 year old almost threw a fit because we played the refresh your tiles rule wrong the first time. My wife quit near the end so she could eat the popcorn I made. We disagreed about resolving ties. I think we are just terrible at playing boardgames together.

I have a metric ton of Heroscape, but set up time is a little lengthy.

Spartacus only plays four, I believe, but one of my brothers will probably bail to pay me back for dodging his Thanksgiving invite.

Duel of Ages II is probably a bad choice for my semi-gamer brothers.

Seven Wonders: ugh. I hate that game. Same with Puerto Rico.

King of Tokyo would probably fly with my brothers. I used to own it, but again my wife got mad while playing it. We just need to have her not play games with us.

Thunder Road might work, especially with a few extra rules.

Two brothers work for Union Pacific and one of them just lost Ticket to Ride in a divorce.

I traded away Steam recently.

El Grande does sound good. I wish there was a version of Android I could play with the brothers. Maybe they would play Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Spartacus will play 5-6 with the Serpent & Wolf expansion, but at that point you may be at it for three hours.
