I just bought a bunch of Talisman stuff. What did I do?

It's my belief that had they simply made it a race for the crown, it never would've had the reputation as "over-long".

Most of my games with my wife last FOREVER because she powers up to ridiculous levels before entering the central map and I don't have the heart to just make it end since she gets so invested.

That said, with 4 players if you play in over two hours, luck has either fucked you all up or you're doing it way wrong (getting too juiced before attempting the center)

That's a really common Talisman problem. You don't risk the middle because you've spent so much time building up / You've spent so long building up you don't want to risk the middle.

I risk a lot all of the time and it's a lot of fun. I really don't care if my character dies because it's Talisman and there's a chance my new character will be stronger in less time anyway if the cards fall right. If they don't fall right I'll try again. Nobody mourns the loss of Noggins the Merchant who was turned Evil and wandered the earth until he died with no money, a mule, and a Doomsword. What's this?! Stickles the Minotaur has risen to avenge the death of Noggins?

Honestly, it's Talisman.

Yeah, Talisman is the ultimate "who cares" game. One friend of mine, in his first game, was turned into a toad a total of like four times, and even once defeated a hobgoblin in toad form. It's now a running joke that he will, of course, be turned into a toad in every game. In our last game he actually took one of the toad character cards preemptively, and stored it underneath his character sheet the whole game.

In one of my most memorable games I was the Ogre Chieftan (the one who looks like Bat Boy with acromegaly) and I was like hot damn, I'm gonna crushinate this motherfucking world with my RAGE-FISTS! And then proceeded to have a series of encounters with bags of gold, horse stables, and various markets; then there were the endless meetings with important, non-combat personages. While everyone else was having the Standard Fantasy Novel Experience I was stuck grinding the day-to-day operations necessary to keep an ogre tribe in the black...

The story's the thing—as long as you surrender to that idea you're guaranteed a great time.
