Is there a game you wouldn't sell for $1,000?

A huge lot of Kingdom Monster Death Plastic just sold on Ebay for $2,500.

I don't think I own any games that I wouldn't sell for thousand dollars. Maybe my Heroscape will be worth that much in a decade.

Followup question: If some shady billionaire who looked like Robert Redford offered to write you a check for your entire collection, what would you ask?

Note: You get to spend that $1k on anything you want. It doesn't have to go toward debt, or window treatments, or your IRA.

Any game in my collection can be yours for $1000. PM me.

Whole collection? I dunno. But if I'm getting $1000 per, that would be in the neighborhood of $120,000.

objectively there is no game I wouldn't sell for 1K. I can always rebuy it or another game like it if need be and pocket a grip of cash. I'm not that attached to any specific mechanic and theme combo that I couldn't be satisfied with a similar title.

That said...I don't know if I'd sell my painted BB teams. I've done that in the past and now regret it. These are more than games. They've moved into the closest thing I create that I'd call decent art. Granted I'm not the best painter, but I did spend time and care on these. There are other ways I can get into $1,000 if I need to without selling squads.

If I were destitute or a financial crises of some sort hit..._every_ item is for sale.

I think all of us would pretty readily sell any game we own for $1000.

You need something to make the question more meaningful, like:
Is there a game you wouldn't sell for $1,000
--if you could never, ever buy it back again.
--if it cost you $2,500 to buy back again.
--it that meant you could never play it again (even someone else's copy)

If I couldn't pick it up again, I dunno. Depends on the game.

I still have a copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga sitting on my shelf. I'll probably never sell it, even if it approaches that mark (and no, it's not there... yet).

I wouldn't sell any game for $1000...Probably because I would have already sold it away when it got to $200.

WHFB; meaning my Skaven army, since it's fully painted and worth more than $1000.

This part is the most fun of your post. "You don't have to be responsible with this sudden windfall. you can buy recreational narcotics and such"

I'd sell any game for 1k. My whole collection.... I guess I'd sell it for $500. I'd only feel guilty about selling Seven Wonders which was a recent gift. Puerto Rico has been a big part of my life since 2003 or so. I'd be sad to see it go even though I never play it anymore.

I guess this is a dumb question, and I should have narrowed it down. I think my collection is worth about $250, excluding Heroscape. Daytona 500 and Hive have some good memories attached. I'd probably keep Twilight Struggle, in case I can play it again. With Heroscape, it's a question of will I play it a decade from now, or longer, with possible grandkids? That would be really cool, but I'm almost 50, and a lot can happen in ten years.

I have Kingdom Death and all of the expansions and I haven't and am not actively trying to sell it.

Maybe, when they fully announce a reprint I may try and sell it with the intention of rebuying but I'm not there yet.

I guess I don't really know what I'd do with the extra money and I know I'd possibly regret not being able to play Kingdom Death. I already have more than enough games and $1k is not going to make much of a difference in my life (would just go to savings probably).

So I guess I'm crazy.

Not directly on topic, but a friend of mine valued his Heroscape collection at about $16,000, if I remember correctly, so I do definitely know a guy who wouldn't sell one of his games for $1,000. (Though calling a massive collection a "game" is pretty disingenuous.)

Yeah, but a bunch of those $999.99 games used to be mine. So why not spend one penny more to be the SECOND rather than THIRD owner?

Value is a funny thing. The reality of it is that there is no Heroscape collection in the world that is actually worth $16,000. Because there is no buyer for that kind of item at that kind of price. Most people do not understand aftermarket/collector valuation at all- witness any episode of Pawn Stars. You see those dudes turn stuff away all the time not because it's not valuable or rare, but because there's no buyer market for it. It doesn't matter if they only made 100 copies of some GenCon exclusive or whatever if a lot of people are not actively in the market for it. I see auction after auction end with no buyer on eBay because items are priced to perceived value rather than an actual, marketable value.

A very, very large Heroscape collection- even with the aquarium plant jungle set- is probably barely worth about $500-$1000, and that is a HIGH estimate. Not because this stuff isn't cool or rare or that there's no interest. It's that there is not a precedent for a buyer at that level that I know of. Spitball values, "emotional" valuation means nothing. If it's "emotionally" worth $16,000 and there is not a buyer willing to spend $16,000...then that is not what it is worth.

This KD set is probably actually worth $2500 _right now_because it is scarce, he has everything, and its future availability is up in the air. But more importantly, there is a buyer at that price, which sets the pace for its value.

And when it all gets reprinted, it will plummet to about $1000 at the most, assuming the new edition has the same things and is similarly retail priced .
