FFG making Game of Thrones version of Cosmic Encounter

Looks like it will be using the HBO show instead of the books for the license. Has photos of the actors and whatnot. My gut is that this is made to specifically target the Barnes n Noble and Target crowd. It is FFG way of trojan horsin' one of the best games of all time into people's homes without them realizing it.

I would never choose to play this over good ol' sci fi Cosmic...nope.

I can see the thematic fit.

Alliances forming and breaking all the time, never knowing who's getting attacked next, etc.

Yeah I can see WHY they did. Lots of backstabbing, alliances, thirst for power...all of the GoT trappings will convert over nicely to the CE system.

It looks like this is going to have some FFG style tweaks as well. For example, it doesn't seem like there is a deck of cards that everyone shares. Instead each player has a house specific deck that makes them all play a bit differently. Also there are only five houses to choose from. But each house has different leaders with different unique powers.

I'm buying this. I love CE, but I never bought any of the newer editions because my old Mayfair set has suited me well over the years. My wife is a huge HBO AGoT fan and this looks like it could be legitimately good. At first glance it looks slightly simplified, or more mass-market, than CE which could go over really well if done right.

Yeah, because putting EON games in new settings has really paid off for them...

What a stupid fucking idea. I would greet a Game of Thrones version of Munchkin or Love Letter with the same disdain.

It's where we are with board games now. Like Wade said, you can't have 5,000+ unique releases a year.

Be prepared to buy the same mechanics over and over...sometimes even the same game over and over...

I'm out of the board game...well, game...but will be over here painting and playing with little plastic mens.

Maybe if it were LotR?

Dave really likes mash-ups. He is hoping for a Big Trouble in Little China vs. Babylon 5 edition with lots of photos from their respective properties.

Honestly I'm surprised that this wasn't assigned to the Star Wars IP.

Yet.

They'll need something to fill up their part of the 6000 games released next year.

I think it's a great idea. 95+% of people who will end up playing it would probably never had played CE otherwise, and most of them will probably love it.

Jack Trout has a hard on for line extension, and FFG is the undisputed King of Line Extension.

This will serve to weaken the CE brand. They better call it (whatever country GoT is in) Encounter to not dilute the brand.

Chris Petersen must have some calloused ass hands because that motherfucker be milking them cash cows by the hundreds
