I'm planning on doing my Wyches in purple instead of black. Black will just make them look like shitty Matrix leftovers.

My son made me buy a squad of chaos marines, and I am really glad he did. These dudes look amazing, and very tweakable posture-wise. We spent the afternoon assembling and giving them names. The 1000 kill team is just 4 guys (maybe points could be squeezed 5). And you can buy a box of 5 cultists for like 10 bucks to complement them.

The Chaos cultists are awesome. I really want to run a whole kill team of them and use Genestealer Cult rules or something. They remind me of the Redemptionist gang from Necromunda.

Not if you add NEON.

Chaos Cultists mostly have the same weapons as GSC. But I wouldn't use the GSC's equipment with them because they have those mining suits and integrated work lights. Which don't make sense for Cultists. I would come up with some kind of respawn or frenzy rule for them. I think they'd be fun in huge groups (15-20) and then have a CSM as a SO. Or maybe a daemon!

It might be fun to give them And They Shall Show No Fear...they'd be cheap, weak, and fight to the death.

Yeah, if you used GSC rules you wouldn't use mining lasers and the other. Just the standard stuff and heavy stubbers, etc.

For SO, you can use the Genestealer stats for a horror/daemonette.

I'm not keen on house-ruling a list from scratch, not that the game is acutely balanced.

That's a great idea re: the Genestealer profile.

I am kind of thinking about doing a Thousand Sons CSM team.

Thousand Sons would be awesome (I've seen a few Kill Teams done up that way). I'm running a Slaanesh CSM team.

It's just the painting stopping me right now...I have TOO MUCH to paint right now. Maybe when I get through Tau, Eldar, and go back and finish the Orks I started on I might think about it...because those dudes are quite a bit more painting-intensive than, say, Tau.

The new Death Guard models are making the rounds...they look freaking awesome. Cultists are also in the 8th starter, I bet they will be new sculpts. That kit is REALLY long in the tooth.

Aren't the current cultists only 5 years old? That's relatively recent in GW terms.

Are they? They seem like 2000-era models.

Really, the ones I have look pretty damn good. Love the heads/masks.

I think they were first released in the sixth edition Dark Vengeance starter in 2012, but I could easily be mistaken.

I painted 5 cultists from the basic box, and my only complaint is the lack of customization (but again, 5 minis for 10$, so I didn't come in with high expectations). The minis are on par with Cadians, or maybe even better depending on your taste. They don't have those battle-hardened faces, but as Charlest says, the weird gas masks are really cool. They absolutely look like a post-apocalyptic gang.
And, sweet Khorne, the CSM. I have way more fun painting them then expected. I thought they'd be like painting a 40K version of Bloodwarriors, but they're frankly so much more. I don't think I'll be able to go back to vanilla ultramarines ever again. The chaos dudes are just way more interesting. I'm even starting to get interested in their lore.

The cultists have an excellent array of melee weapons as well. Mauls, flails, blades. I bought a pre-assembled set on Ebay that came with 20 of the dudes, including a huge flamer (converted I think) and a heavy stubber. The leader looks like a half-Vampire dude dual wielding a shotty and a sword. They're the closest thing you can get to a Necromunda vibe in Shadow War.

My issue with the cultists is that a CSM cultist-based team is probably a suboptimal configuration, given that kill team is still capped at 10.
The way I see it, it is better to build a core team of marines and add some cheap cultists now and then. If the cap was at 15 models, like genestealer cults, maybe a strength-in-numbers strategy would be more attractive.

I started a solo match last night, Skitarii vs. Orks. I think the Orks will remain less effective until I can get my Promethium Forge terrain; the skitarii fill them full of holes before they can get into melee range.
