Just "accidentally" bought 10 Necrons on ebay. So I guess I'll have a generic Necron squad.

Whoops!

Now you need to accidentally buy an Immortals box.

Man, I HATE painting the Tau Pathfinders! Those models blow...the current reboot batch looks better (Tau Sept colors) than the first but still...detail is crappy on then unless you paint the thinnest layers possible.

Eldar on the other hand are turning out to be fun to paint. Love the white and green.

Finished my solo match of Skitarii vs. Orks. The orks did actually manage to get base to base with one skitarii, and that skitarii went to the Warp. But the orks paid a terrible price and I ended up calling it, despite them consistently making their bottle tests. Two of them went over the same ledge at one point.

I also discovered during this match that the rokkit launcha doesn't use a template. I think I'm going to remove it from my list, because that makes it a lot less fun. I do love the model, though.

Done. You're what is known as a "bad influence."

Go ahead and buy it, I'll grab one later. Looking at the kill team rules for Necrons, it's a bit frustrating. The leader costs more than a trooper even though he is functionally identical. And since they don't start with guns, at its cheapest the kill team only gets 6 guys (leader, 2 troopers, 3 newbies). Which means I have a lot of extra necrons.

I'll gladly buy your extra Necrons. This might be a good way for us both to get kitted out.

The Necron list is sort of screwed up. Most lists you will see people not running ANY Warriors because the cost differential between them an armed Immortal doesn't really make sense. Pay the extra and get a very superior fighter, every time.

4 Inmortals with Tesla Carbines and gear is almost default at 1k unless you want to do something with Deathmarks. I guess Warriors are good in campaign when you need a new body but don't have the 40 points to grade up to an Immortal.

They have very little weapon variety but they get cool stuff like Mindshackle Scarabs and Shadow looms. I love the Deathmarks. Reanimation Protocol is great but I think they overvalued it in working out the points for the faction.

Overall, I like Necrons and I like playing with them...but I'm a "rule of cool" player. If I were serious about it I wouldn't choose them over Harlequins or Tyranids.

I bought an el cheapo loose lot of Warriors on eBay, just like 8 of them...and I have yet to even build them.

Now that you folks have played this a bit, I'm curious. If I had 4 to 6 new people, that don't have any models, that wanted to try out a miniature game. Why would I choose Shadow War over Necromunda?

I guess variety of aliens and races and availability/ease of models would be the main reasons. Are there any strictly game play reasons that Shadow War is superior?

On an objective basis, I don't think so.
But subjectively some people may prefer the shorter mini campaign style of shadow war.

I'm torn on that myself. I like resolving a campaign over a weekend, but I dislike the lack of granularity that shadow war has in comparison to necromunda/gorkamorka.

But shadow war is a lot more swingy stat wise than necro/gorka. Which seemed to be a criticism of necro/gorka was that gangs were very samey. This isn't as true in shadow war.

Shadow War IS Necromunda. The rules are almost exactly the same down the line, with some stuff in the campaign being the only notable changes and even then they are really minor. So it is still pretty much 2nd edition 40k.

And it's a really great game- I wouldn't call it simple, and it is actually pretty old fashioned...but there's really a lot of detail and potential in it for some stupendous, narrative gameplay.

The 40k setting- bona fide, not the old gangs- is a major selling point. You can "get into Warhammer" with this game with a $20-$50 outlay. Which is SUPER cheap for miniature games. And there is a pretty wide variety of KTs to explore.

But yeah, I think the best reason to get into it is that it's a more approachable, compact 40k.

On a related note. I went to a store that had 3 boxes of this today. I was under the impression that it was tough to find... did they re-release with that book or something? (This store also has tons of other GW stuff that is tougher to find on shelf, 2 space hulks, 2 Chaos in the Old World, Last Edition Stuff, etc. so could be just real low traffic)
