Wait, what?

Based on the quality of the paint jobs I just assumed they *WERE* prepainted. If that's what they did professionally, ye gods.

I think there's a different focus here, and that's the setting and accessibility. The game seems smooth to play and looks cinematic. There are some really clever mechanism (not necessarily original, but well put together), like better cover system (both how it works with positioning and its interaction with the dice combat).

Until I see customizable figures, I say the "hobby" part is not a priority. It's hard to say "my army" also. But neither was an issue for X-Wing.

I'm curious to see if this will take off.

One does wonder, after years of little content, whether gamers will get tired of Star Wars. The amount that FFG alone relies on is staggering.

Thinking about this more...I'm not sure I'm that interested in this as much as I thought I was. It sits in an awkward position. It's not mainstream/family friendly enough like a Hasbro/MB style game, and it's not hobby enough like Warhammer. Or Armada for that matter And, ironically, with all of the cards, counters and I'm sure dials it is likely to be more complicated than a full on Hobby miniatures game. The single piece PVC models look like crap after watching the video more closely, and having painted figures at the FFG level of quality...I can't say I'd be excited about that.

There is also a terrain issue. SW has very specific environments and Rebel troopers/Stormtroopers/character costumes for each. So if I spend the time, effort and money to put together a Tatooine board, what's the point of a Snowtrooper squad or Leia in Hoth gear?

I think I would much rather have seen a game or games pitched about like Risk Star Wars covering different battles or maybe even a Battlelore based system with setpiece scenarios. Or an upcycled/repurposed Gears of War.

You're all leaping to the conclusion FFG isn't going to announce that one next month.

I'll just get a copy of the rules for this one and re-purpose the 300 Star Wars minis I got for $9 five years back. (Painted, by the way.)

I was pretty sure I wanted a Star Wars ground combat miniatures game until I saw it.

FFG is making a wargame out of scale with its boardgame counterpart (IA), while GW is making a board game (Shadespire) to scale (with rules!) with its wargame counterpart.

One of the two in this split partnership seems to have better vision and planning.

Gameplay-wise it looks like a winner to me. Seems to have a (slightly) advanced Heroscape feel to it. If it were pre-painted I would have even pre-ordered. I think they fucked that up. I just don't think the average FFG gamer is into painting stuff.
