i just say 'tabletop' and point out a few games that are dope. It covers the range from miniatures to dexterity games to cards to D&D to monopoly.
I own a game store so usually it kind of makes sense for me to say stuff, but I avoid any elitist etymology. I also cringe when people use confusing insider lingo like "weight" when defining games. If someone says that they play Settlers of Catan, I ask them what they like about it, and try to go from there. It's not about my tastes and interests, it's about trying to relate to the customer and find something they enjoy. "Simultaneous action selection 3.5 weight Ameritrash Euro hybrid metacooperative" makes you sound like an idiot.
