Logistics - the un-glamorous but totally necessary component of Kickstarter . Sadly underappreciated til its too late.

Just ask Cambridge Games Factory.

My instinct was to reply with pretty much exactly this, haha.

Yeah, I got really lucky to get this instead of a random copy of bios megafauna.

But it's all fair in the free market, amirite?

Just seconds ago I got a call from Dan Yarrington, who told me that he had reviewed his books, and that I was due a "substantial reimbursement" for the fulfillment of the Bios:Genesis/Bios:Megafauna/John Company KS campaign and website orders. And that they would be issuing a statement for the backers shortly.

If so, then the year might not have been a total loss.

How much would it cost to buy a banner ad on BGG calling for a boycott of Game Salute until this is fully resolved? Or here, for that matter?

Even after its resolved I'd boycott Game Salute and their various shell companies.

The strategy posts in this thread are 100% why this game is my shit and it's heartbreaking I'll never or rarely ever play it:

You're very much making me want to purchase and play this game even if it's only solo or online! However, I can't find anyone locally who'll play Pax Porfiriana let alone John Company!

Yeah, we do Pax games online easy if that's something you're interested in. Doing John Company would require a VASSAL module that doesn't exist yet and would 100% require using live play and voice chat online rather than PBEM.

I like the idea that there is some guy out there using a skeletor avatar on BGG who is not Mr. Skeletor.

I played John Company a couple of times in December. It's a bit on the complex side, but not really as much as the board and the rules would have you believe. But it's very much a sandbox game, so it's up the players to determine how all the parts fit together.

I am a big fan of Republic of Rome (well, was a big fan really, since i haven't played it in a decade or more), so I was thrilled about the prospect of a "fast Republic of Rome". But our games weren't really fast at all: JC is a negotiation game, so when players discuss everything (and we did!), the game just takes a long time. Our first game, we only managed half a short, 6-round game in an evening. Second try we made it through 6 rounds, but it took 5+ hours, not including the rules explanation.

So I am a bit conflicted so far: I really like most of the game, I just wish it played a little faster...

Gary Sax wrote: This game is fucking SINISTER. I had one player buy up factories and shipyards at home and then otherwise give almost no help to the company while the others tried to make money the honest British way---steal money, force open markets, and kill the locals.

I couldn't agree more. I found the early game state to be very fragile. The company could fall into a death spiral if there wasn't any successful trade. I'm hesitant to play this with 5 or 6. There will be many turns after the first where some players will have nothing to do aside from family actions. This is Cole's best design to date, but I'm not sure that it will win over my usual groups.

^also, when the rules recommend you need to understand the way the elephant works when you decide where to trade/how the presidencies should act, it is not fucking around. Someone trading big in a place that has a high probability of having an event could be gutting the company.

Again, I reiiterate, I have not played besides solo, so trust others. Those are just my observations.

Here is Dan Thurot's review: spacebiff.com/2018/02/28/john-company/

Even without the social commentary, however, John Company stands out as a monumental achievement, letting players take hold of a sprawling enterprise at its joints, muscles, and mind, setting it loose on the world, and eventually permitting them to cannibalize the very creature that gave them life. All for the sake of fashion, an awed hush when they enter a room, and maybe a Scottish island. It’s demanding, punitive, and nearly as complicated as it looks, but it also shines as brilliantly as the jewel in the crown of the British Empire.

As expected, this game is sitting on my shelf now that I've learned it in toad mode bc it's a tall order to get players. SOMEDAY.
