Kemet or Nexus Ops?

Kemet or Nexus Ops? was created by blatz
I want to add a DOAM game to my collection and I have it narrowed down to these two. I know Nexus Ops is well regarded around here but I'm curious if Kemet is still getting any love from anyone.

Nexus Ops is a timeless masterpiece. Kemet is a really good game from a few years ago.

NO you can put on the table and have fun on 10 minutes.
Kemet has a very distinct learning curve, and new players will get destroyed.

I’d probably go for Cyclades over Kemet.

Nexus Ops > Cyclades > So many other DOAM games > Forgoing playing anything for socializing > Kemet.

Kemet is pretty limited when you get down to it. The tech tree has more than a few options that are clearly better than others and if you play it at least 5 times, it totally kills the game.

Yah, I was going to point out Kemet's very short lifespan.

Nexus Ops is a far superior game.

Cyclades I just love and cannot be objective about it. Is it better than Nexus Ops? Probably not but I'd play it over Nexus Ops any day only because I love it.

Kemet's tech tree bloat makes it a worse game than Nexus Ops.

So many options for analysis paralysis. And like Josh mentioned some are clearly better than others, so the bloat is unneeded and makes it feel less refined.

Add to the fact that Kemet's theme likely should have been a sci fi space combat game considering the mechanics, I won't recommend it when somebody mentioned Nexus Ops in their query.

[Edit]Shameless plug:
I still have a sealed copy of the original Avalon Hill edition for non scalpers prices and am located in the twin cities to avoid extortionate shipping charges.

Never seen Kemet and it sounds like a clever game but the comments here seems to say it got a bit too clever for what it needed to do.

I love Nexus Ops because it has plastic figures, slightly intelligent dice combat, take that cards and VP collections that allows players to get knocked around a bit but still have a chance of winning. But if you have four players regularly or can buy two games then get Fortress America.

Fortress America > Nexus Ops > ...... Kemet.

Cyclades is the correct answer.

I've played Nexus Ops more times than I recall.

I played Cyclades once, bought it, and played it a couple more times, then it went on the shelf. I keep meaning to dust it off and see if my daughter - who's interested in classical mythology - might like it.

I've played someone else's copy of Kemet exactly once.

Nexus Ops. I’ve never played Kemet. It looks cool, but doesn’t look better than Nexus Ops.

I've not played Kemet, but in my experience the answer to the question "______ vs. Nexus Ops" is almost always Nexus Ops.

Disagree. I feel the same way about nexus ops as I do settlers of catan. Neither game holds any nostalgia for me since I only started playing board games in 2014 and leaned them all around the same time. I sold my copy of nexus ops years ago after only using it as a one hour filler for my friends who weren't into gaming. I was never excited to play it either. The initial wave of games that I learned includes kemet, twilight struggle, glory to Rome, nexus ops, game of thrones, catan, citadels. I still own kemet, glory to Rome, and twilight struggle and want to play all of them on game days.

Thanks, guys. I already own and love Cyclades which is why Kemet is on my radar. Has anyone played Kemet with the expansion? I've heard it addresses most people's criticisms and turns it into a less deterministic affair.

I've owned it and expansion. I liked it well enough, but fixing unliked things it didn't. Though it did try to address the perceived last player advantage.

Oii. Where to begin on the expansion?
The new divine intervention cards just add more bloat. It's just more people showing up to a party without many of them being interesting. It's fun having a houseful of folks at first, but after awhile you realize they are all just drinking your beer.

The new win condition made the turn order swing in the opposite way
The new dawn phase I found interesting and the path to ta seti was easy enough to integrate.

Long story short, the expansion provides the best and worst things about expansions. Don't buy it unless you exhaustively play kemet. There really is no need. Especially if the justification is fixing it, because it doesn't. It's just different.

My view is this: If you have Cyclades and its expansions (Hades most of all) AND Ascending Empires, you need to look at a different genre because you’ve got the best in class.

If I had to have 5 DOAMs for some arbitrary reason...

Cyclades
Ascending Empires
Twilight Imperium 2nd
Eclipse
War of the Ring 2nd Ed.

You could look at others like Runewars or Conquest of Nerath or go way back to Conquest of the Empire but if you have those 5 you pretty much have everything you ever need and getting anything else is just wanting weaker shit for variety’s sake alone.

Haven't played KEMET, but I love NEXUS OPS. That game is just good. I can play it with my 6yo (and lose) and I can play with my 40-something friends. Good times either way. CYCLADES is also good, but so different from NEXUS OPS it seems weird to compare them. One is about snagging this one little thing over here in a sneaky way. One is about flying space dragons from a mountain into ur base and killin ur dudes.
