Anybody have a scoop on GMT's new version of Blackbeard? Will it be worth getting?

I have the AH version of it, which is worth owning.

Probably yes.

It's supposed to be a reprint with streamlined rules. The old edition was maybe a little more simulation than game, although it has its ups.

And if Richard Berg rules are ever streamlined, a masterpiece is in the making ;)

Richard Berg has stated that he's redone the game from the ground up, so the gameplay will be nothing like the original. I'd heard enough good things about it to preorder it many moons ago.

Also, Richard is doing a remake of Conquistadors as well, but he's taking a bit of time off to reconsider how he wants to design the game.

A friend loaned me his copy of Blackbeard back in the mid-90s. I can't remember his reasoning, but he expected me to learn the rules and then teach him how to play. This was the same guy who routinely won 5- and 6-player games of Jyhad (now known as Vampire: the Eternal Struggle), one of the most ridiculously complex games that I have ever enjoyed.

However, this was during my peak dating years, where I was running around like Wiley E. Coyote trying to get with the ladies, only I was sometimes successful. So his game sat at my place for a couple of years until a certain ex-girlfriend with a meth problem burglarized my place.

No, she didn't steal Blackbeard.

But the fact that my place got burglarized motivated my friend to reclaim his game and learn the rules himself. Less than a year later, we finally sat down to play a 3-player game of Blackbeard. And I remember nothing. Ok, technically, I remember that the game seemed long, with too much downtime and not enough action. And I remember that his roommate kept playing the same new CD over and over again. But I don't remember Blackbeard being the great game that people say it is.

Regarding the AH version: 3-player sucks, 2-player is passable, 1-player is on my top 10.

One thing that Richard did say about the original Blackbeard was that the monotony was intentionally built into the game to simulate what a pirate's life really was like: 95% monotony, 5% excitement.

I've always wondered if Richard was saying that one tongue-in-cheek, but from what pirate research I've done over the years, the reality was that a pirate had a life of boring monotony while waiting for a ship to come into their sights.

I'm looking forward to this one. I hope the action is a little tighter through. Monotony means that none of my friends will play it.

Without having any familiarity with the original version, I am very interested in this one. The artwork posted thus far looks sensational.

I saw what the board and box will look like at GMT East; the graphics look amazing. The rules looked pretty damn extensive though.

Blackbeard looks pretty cool. Despite what the meth junkies are saying about it.

Wow.

A short skimming of the rules, and I'm seriously impressed.

The same for me. Seems a bit fiddly, but who could resist a 66-sided dice. ;)

You can still order it for the P500 price for a few more days.
