Got My Holy Grail

The IRS bought me my holy grail. Got the refund and my wife gave me the go-ahead to buy a copy of Dune. 100 beans off of Ebay. If I had any patience to wait around I could have gotten it cheaper and I could have picked up the edition with the Sting cover (no fucking way) for $85. Nope, instant gratification with no regrets. Box a little worn, contents in pretty good shape, some of the sheilds look like they've never been folded. Life is good.

I read the rules tonight and they look a whole lot less complex than I thought they would be. Should be pretty easy to get my head around. One thing that came to mind is that there could have been a whole lot more treachery cards. It would take me an hour to come up with about 20 events from the first book that would translate to some interesting game effects. No big deal though, I think I'll have fun with it and my first game I think I'll use the Additional Character Advantages. I am a Dune nut, my copy of The Dune Encyclopedia is one of my prized possessions, I will play Dune tomorrow night (will grill steaks to bribe my wife into it).

I will refrain from saying "the spice must flow"
aw shit, I said it

Sorry, but I always feel the need to correct people on this. You bought your holy grail because that was never the IRS's money. You earned it and then allowed the IRS to hold it interest-free. Financially you're better off having them take less and keeping your money in a bank account earning interest.

Congratulations on getting Dune. :)

I've never understood why people don't rise up against the IRS en masse and stage a tax revolt...I'd join in.

DUNE is actually a really easy game...it's easy to teach, easy to play, easy to comprehend...it does take a game or two to realize the potential the powers have working together though.

THE DUNE ENCYCLOPEDIA...I still have the copy I checked out when I worked at the public library...15 years ago...

But I love having taxes taken out. Not seeing 100% that hard earned money
on payday makes me feel...warm. Knowing that the govt is spending it wisely...

sorry just choked on some bile...

That's funny. I bought my copy at a used book sale at a public library in San Francisco. It's interesting that Frank Herbert called it "official" but his hack son and that dildo Kevin Anderson didn't acknowledge most of it when they wrote those prequels.

I had to get it from InterLibrary Loan a few weeks ago. It had been years since I'd read it, and it was as I remembered: A HOJILLION TIMES BETTER THAN BRIAN HERBERT'S SAD EFFORTS. I just wanted to cry when I started reading about mechs with brains. They say the fruit doesn't fall from the tree, but Frank's tree must have been on a steep incline for his son to push out some of these books. {Shudder}. Guy's gotta make a living an all, but this is a fine case study for copyright reformation.

Good luck with the game, man, avoid the new books.

When I was a kid, I took the DE to be completely, 100% canonical. Because it was totally congruous with Herbert's vision and the things it extrapolated on were managed with respect and logic that followed straight from the books (well, only the first three).

Sardaurkar customs and discipline...Bene Gesserit myth and practice (Alexander and Jesus were part of the breeding program!?!)...a complete breakdown of the Holtzman Effect with a diagram...the bivalve lifeform that enables the flapping motion of the Ornithropters...there's some great science fiction in the DE in and of itself.

The Brian Herbert/Anderson books are a fucking travesty, exactly the kind of shameless exploitation that gives the sci-fi shelf down at the bookstore such a bad name. Frankly, I don't care about the details of what exactly happened in the Butlerian Jihad...I'd rather imagine it for myself than have some fucking asshole hack writer tell me with his shit prose.

Sadly I've never even seen a copy of the DE. I only read the first three books though so I'm not sure how much I'd get out of it.

I just checked, the DE does reference Leto II the God Emperor, but that's as far as it goes (4th book). Yes, I did like the last 3 FRANK Herbert books written. Things got pretty weird in God Emperor.

I read the first 3 prequels those hacks wrote. Went from just bad to painful diahhrea bad. What really sucks is that those 2 hacks found a highlit copy of Chapterhouse Dune that had notes in it scribbled by Herbert, he was outining the final Dune book but passed away before he could do so. A GOOD writer might have done something worth reading, it would have been nice to read a fitting conclusion to the best science fiction saga ever written. Instead those 2 jackoffs milked it for 2 novels, their cash cow and the end of the saga. I keep thinking I should read them but I'd probably get pretty pissed if I did. People have talked about George Lucas raping their childhood (he didn't rape mine, beside the point), B Herbert (that asshole should change his last name) and Anderson sure did fuck up something I held in really high regard. Fuckers.

Being an old cat lady, I am obliged to clear all my purchases with one of the furballs....

But since they refuse to speak english, I get to buy whatever I want. This works out well.

I need to try Dune game. We have one here at the office... I loved the first three books, got stuck on 4, and refuse to accept children banking on parents names as legit.
