Weekly Trash - Heroscape

In heroclix outwit represents a generic power that cancels another power. With a little imagination it makes perfect sense. (the person outwitting Superman supllies the sniper with krypton bullets.)

You're completely right though... they include charaters of vastly varying power. They have to 'level the playing feild" just to make the game playable.

I just bought this for a friends birthday and we've played it once so far.
On of the main reasons I was drawn to it is that distance is measured in hexes as opposed to inches, like most other mini games.
Pulling out a measuring tape is one of the most annoying and funkilling things that be done in a game.

We have a big wicker basket that everything gets dropped into. Takes up some space but cleanup takes about ten seconds.

With three boys (8, 5, and 5) this game has turned out to be a nice grab. I got some additional tiles on eBay to beef up the set a bit for just a few bucks. There's no real point in getting all the different heroes -- the kids are just as happy with the ones that came in the basic set.

I can play advanced rules with my oldest. The other two are happy with the basic rules and games go by really fast.

Sag.

I'll nominate myself for whipping boy - Heroscape is one of my all-time favorite games. I have a stupid amount of the stuff taking up valuable space in my tiny office. I've played in dozens of tournaments and game days, and spend most of my time at GenCon with my 'Scape nerd friends.

I can see where the game might seem unbalanced, or random, or just irritating, but I haven't seen many games that can as consistently reward the good player over the mediocre.

I love Heroscape. Can't get enough of it. I originally bought it just for the terrain, but found myself loving the simple rules and quick gameplay. Yes, the terrain setup can take awhile, but for me it's a labor of love. With my grass, water, sand, rock, swamp, trees and brush of various types, castles, ruins, snow, ice, and lava, I can make any kind of battlefield I want. I've put this terrain to use for so many other games it's ridiculous, and my table always looks great. As for the figures, well, they are what they are. I find them fun, the powers and balance reasonable, and the game amusing. Some people complained they're unbalanced, but I would argue Heroscape is more balanced than most other games on the market, and Games Workshop will never come close to making a system as balanced as this one. Also, one of the beautiful things about the system is it's so easy to port over other figures with it. I used the terrain and rules to make a Mech game I found much and faster and more amusing than Mechwarrior.
