Have be reorganizing my game collection and was reacquainted with this gem:

I'm confident that is the worst game cover I've ever seen.

It's a hex & counter wargame of Mediterranean empires. Re-released as Imperator, with better artwork.

((Hopefully I got the image working this time!))

Holy Smokes, that is bad.

What has been seen cannot be unseen.

Thank you, Geoff. I'm gonna have some nightmares now...

Is it a sex game? Nah, it can't be.

Can you imagine how embarassing it must be to bring that game to the cash register of a gaming store, especially if the cashier is a girl? Oh man, I'd sooner buy anti-fungal ointment at the pharmacy....or small condoms.

Somewhere, sometime, there was a meeting where a guy presented this picture at a meeting. They rubbed their chins deep and thought. They pondered.

Then they said..."Yeah, lets go with this."

What the F-ing Hell!

Yeah, that's what gets me too...someone said at some point "yes, let's go with that- send it to the printer".

You can look around you any time, any place and you see artwork and illustrations. What kind of person looks at this and can't see that it is in no way, shape or form on par with ANYTHING you see out in the world? How could a pubilsher of ANY size say "yes, let's put our money behind (heh heh) this"?

If someone said "yeah, my autistic child drew that", then I'd give it a pass but that's about it.

This isn't even funny bad like Warriors of Batak...it's just pathetic.

But there again, this is a hobby where some of its pursuants think that XXXL Hawaiian shirts and khaki shorts adorned with a fanny pack are in good taste...

lol at the XXXL Hawaiian shirts. Ever hear John Pinette's take on the size of clothing in Hawaii? The guy is massive, if you didn't know, and he says he walks into a clothing store in Hawaii and the guy says (John does this perfect Hawaiian accent here too), "So you 'bout a medium, brudda?"

Isn't that they way it was? Vikings: Warriors of the North taught me the importance of historical accuracy. I'm a total convert now. Is there going to be an expansion?

The tilted O in "OF" is my favorite part. Clearly the artist looked at their work, realized it wasn't quite up to snuff and need a little push to get over the edge. So they tilted the O a little bit to give it that oooompf it so desperately needed.

Brilliant move, very edgy.

Although the N in Kings sticking up a little higher than the N in King is a sweet touch as well. Clearly meant to represent some kind of asymmetry that you can find in the game itself. Fucking clever.

Then again, at some point someone said the same to this:

And after they realized that this is probably the ugliest cover for a high-profile boardgame ever, so they will need a new one, they commission the same artist, and then accepted this:

I still boggle at the cover (and title) of Guildhall. A professional company looked at that box cover and said, "Hell yeah, this will move units!"

I wonder if this game was the genesis of today's "rape games" genre.

I also wonder if, at the time of King of Kings release, there was wailing and gnashing of teeth over a woman's buttocks being depicted on a family board game. "I can't let my children see that, how do I explain it to my wife?"

The problem is, shit art doesn't matter in board games because you've got these losers that have zero taste or sense of aesthetics that think that function is more important than appearance. There are gamers out there that would be totally OK with NO art and would probably like that better so that they could focus on the mechanics and numbers better.

There's also this idiotic notion that started with the whole Eurogames thing that games should have this bullshit "stately", "sophisticated" art like what you see on Caylus up there. Because that makes these games LEGITIMATE adult pursuits and not just toys. Thankfully, by now the scouring European white guy style is gone...

And now we have "hey, let's put our friends and family in a photoshop filter and put them on the box!" Which is probably WORSE. Witness Guildhall...

Good Industries released two games, both by the same designer. The meeting you're talking about likely happened at a kitchen table and included the designer, a close relative, and the designer's cat. The designer wanted the game done with and printed, the relative didn't want to spend any more money or time, and the cat didn't give a damn either way.
