I imagine you guys have read my stuff talking about working with kids at the local library on deep games for critical thinking skills education. Well, the division of the Navy that he works for has a writeup in The Economist, which can be found here -- www.economist.com/news/united-states/215...oard-games-war-games

The first paragraph as a teaser:

TWO evenings a month, four dozen defence and intelligence officials gather in an undisclosed building in Virginia. They chat informally about “what if” scenarios. For example: what if Israel were to bomb Iran’s nuclear sites? Recent chats on this topic have been fruitful for a surprising reason, says John Patch, a member of the Strategic Discussion Group, as it is called. Nearly a quarter of those who regularly attend play a board game called Persian Incursion”, which deals with the aftermath of just such an attack. For half the players, such games are part of their job.

I had been led to believe by others in different branches of the DoD that most of the wargame scenarios they played out were more about role-playing than detailed sims. When Tim handed me this article, indicating he worked with the people mentioned in it I asked him about that and his response was "oh no, plenty of chit pushing."

A short read, nothing too surprising but worth a look into how the other half of the industry works.

They mention GMT and Labyrinth IIRC, as well.

They've been gathering to play wargames since the 70's based on what I've heard.

There was a dust up over here a couple of years back over military recruiters "infiltrating" game groups. One of them got my friend's kid.
