Yes, finding a regular FtF opponent would making your board wargaming take off, no matter which games you end up playing. That's how it worked for me.

And that's exactly why my wargaming dropped off...my partner Billy Motion moved way the hell away.

If you really do want some kind of tactical WW2 game, quit dicking around and just get ASLSK #1 as others have suggested. Seriously, don't bother with Combat Commander, Conflict of Heroes, etc.. Not that they aren't good games, but after you get acclimated to ASL all of those other games are like eating bowling alley snack bar food after having dinner at a five star rated restaraunt. There really is no comparison, and for the time you spend piddling around with lesser games you can just learn the real deal.

It is a truly great game, and if you're going to commit seriously to a game, it's worth it. Nothing can touch it in its particular field and it could literally provide you with a lifetime of gaming on its own. The starter kits are very approachable, moreso if you kind of apprentice with an experienced mentor. I didn't and I had no trouble playing through all three starter kits both solo and teaching others. There's more game in those three low price kits than in a lot of $100 games.

I think it's more like eating at a decent restaurant after leaving another place that had slow service, a tie requirement, and an overpriced wine list.

Finally, i tried fields of fire on Vassal. Quite different from classic wargames, but not too difficult to play. Ordered the game from gmt.
