Nuklear Winter

Nuklear Winter was created by dan daly
So what does it mean if the groundhog sees his shadow, the shadow gets burned into the pavement, and the groundhog turns to ashes? Nuklear Winter (yes Nuklear with a Kool sounding K) is coming- that's what.

I've been following the development of this game over on BGG, and am kind of surprised I've not heard anyone else mention it over here. It's a hex and counter wargame that seems to firmly straddle the line between wargame and ameritrash. Based on what info has been given so far the game will have:

-A similar (and appears to be even easier to play/learn) rules system to the Eisenbach Gap Word at War family of games
-Up to 3 players
-Mutants
-Cultists
-Nazis who have been hiding underground for a few decades and are ready to reclaim the Fatherland- or at least the nuklear wasteland that used to be the Fatherland
-Tanks
-Monsters
-Tanks assembled out of scrap from other tanks
-V-2 rockets
-Radioactive wastelands
-and more

If that sounds intriguing watch this:

boardgamegeek.com/video/1539/nuklear-win...r-winter-68-timeline

And the if that gets you excited you can watch a full play through of one scenario here:

boardgamegeek.com/video/5320/nuklear-winter-68/empty-quiver

I'm not affiliated with this project in any way. I am looking forward to having a 3 way battle royale between NATO commandos, holdout Nazis, and mutant cultists. The game is supposed to be out later this year.

There is a third promo video that's been put out:

boardgamegeek.com/video/1540/nuklear-win...ar-winter-68-trailer

You can show this one to your eurogaming friends to trick them into buying the game. It makes the thing look like:

Power Grid: Underground Panzer Factory Manager

Those crazy Germans. They're not going to let a little nuklear winter get in the way of meeting productivity goals :)

Dan, who's making this game? Is it an indy or a big house?

Lock N Load games, they are a smaller but established wargame company. Their biggest gamelines are Lock N Load- which is a squad level wargame and World at War which is a WWIII platoon based tactical game. Nuklear Winter is going to be similar to the World at War rules but not a part of the series.

Edit- this game was previously published as a free print-and-play game by the designer under the title Nuklear Winter '78. Now that the guy has hooked up with Lock N load to publish it as Nuklear Winter '68 the DIY version is no longer available. I never heard of it till a few months back, so I never played the download version.

Looks cool but where are the monsters and mutants? I only watched part of it. Maybe the radioactive zombie charge out at the end..

What?!?!? Where'd this come from?

I'm about to make a rare impulse game purchase (the last being Minion Hunter in the mid-90's). The only thing, _only_ thing, causing pause is LnL's launch of All Things Zombie. That didn't go over so well...

Dan Daly, any idea why the name change being 10 years earlier? Same units still? Not that it matters, just curious.

Avery, check these threads out for images of mutants and such:

www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/574819/is-t...lose-to-its-p-number

I could use a good three player wargame too...

Yeah not many mutants shown in the example scenario video. There are three factions:

NATO (which includes the Russians in this alt-history timeline)
NAZIS
The Black Hand- wasteland mutants ala Battle for the Planet of the Apes :)

The video showed a 2 player scenario which was NATO vs NAZIS.

Towards the end of the video some of the cultist units show up as a random event and attack the Nazis for a round.

I'm not really sure. My guess would be a marketing decision (perhaps the 60's are cooler then the 70's) or some legal/copyright issue, but I really don't have any idea why the name changed or how different the LnL version will be from the PnP version.

So the two player game would work with the mutant faction popping up from time to time. I wonder how the solo game plays.

Looks like a Pandemic like game called Zombie Wars is also up in their P500 program.

I think there would be a mix of different scenarios for the 2 player- some NATO vs Nazi, some Mutant vs NATO, some Mutant vs Nazi. Or at least that's what I'm hoping.

Lock 'n Load has been reaching out a bit lately to expand their product mix. That's good news as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone want to speculate on what program they used for the gameplay video? I'm trying to get back in to the latest software and break from my dependence on using photoshop for *everything*.
