Just some good pics of people playing for a TI article I've gotten done.

But the pics are just to show the differences. My friend didn't take any pics of our most recent TI3 game, and I'm still looking for pics of my last TI2 game...I think that the SD with them was on my old phone.
Suffice to say, this will not be a photo-intensive one.

The article. I just don't have any desire to fuck with it anymore, ie. converting back to text, adding the pics in the F:AT blog interface...so here it is. Begin the trouncing.

A planet not being able to cast votes because it built a spaceship? It makes absolutely no sense.
Maybe you can't build a spaceship and then cast votes, but you can cast votes and then build a spaceship.
Just like you'd expect, right? :-/
I wholeheartedly agree with the TI3 parts of your review, specifically:
It adds "gaminess" for the sake of adding more rules to create artificial depth. More abstraction, more bullshit.
I WISH! The worst part is that they appropriated the Puerto Rico role system...but didn't *get* what made it work. The Puerto Rico system is easily explained: you choose what everyone gets to do, plus you get a minor related perk. TI3? You choose what you want to do...and everyone else gets something specific to what you chose, but not necessarily related at all. It is SPECTACULARLY unintuitive.his personal homage to Puerto Rico into TI3 with the advent of "strategy cards", which are, in essence, a special power that you can use during your turn, while in many cases gives others a weaker version of it.
And you didn't even savage the awful Political system as much as you should have: pre-Shattered Empire, if you choose Politics, you flip over the top card of the political deck and vote on that. A completely random law. And you chose a strategy card to do this. W T F? How did that rule make it anywhere near a game? Then Shattered Empire thankfully added a hand of political cards, so you could choose the law to vote on. Too bad the political deck is made up literally every possible effect the designers could think of, without bothering to worry about the fact that > 50% of them are totally lame!
And of course, the original Imperial I think actually holds the title for most broken mechanic ever in a big-name game, way the HELL more broken than any Halifax Hammer shit, because it's something the dumbest bonehead could figure out. I hear the "it's intentional!" argument: is it intentional that if the game does not have a number of turns divisible by 6, then the players later in the turn order have to fulfill an entire TWO extra OBJECTIVES compared to the player who went first? I don't really care that it was fixed in the expansion, because it betrays such obvious ineptitude and lack of thought about the game that it makes you wonder why you'd want to give more thought to the game than the designers.
I'm fine with the "Cold War" aspect, though. I think of it more as a Civ game than as a wargame.
