GMT deep-sixes Circus Train P500

It looks like GMT and VPG have determined that Circus Train would be better off getting the increased component quality from VPG, rather than waiting forever and a day to get those last 50 preorders from GMT's system.

Here's the thread.

Too bad, but Swing States gave me hope that VPG is up to the task of producing a much better physical product. It's very likely I'll pony up for the new version.

Not shocked given it hasn't moved for 6 months.

Agreed. Shame as I would have liked to seen "GMT-grade" components for this one. That said, I haven't bought any of VPG's deluxe games yet, so I have absolutely no idea what a VPG-deluxe version will look like. I should probably rectify that [wonder if they've done a Nemo's War Deluxe yet...]

On a semi-related note, GMT will continue to publish the No Retreat! and Napoleon20 lines "as long as people continue to be interested in them" along with any other VPG designs that they believe would find success with GMT's audience.

NO RETREAT sold 5000 copies, so no surprise they kept it with GMT.

That number shocked me, it was so high. Didn't think there were that many wargamers.

No Retreat was bad ass. I'm more a plastic guy than a hex/counter guy, but No Retreat! was just spectacularly good for the money. I mean, it's the perfect light introductory wargame, sort of like Tactics II was back in the day.

I keep hearing great things about Circus Train. What's the deal there?

Uba wrote it up back in 2010:

And I wrote it up a few weeks ago:

I think Barnes covered it at some point, but it's probably in the gaping maw that used to be Gameshark.

Yeah, No Retreat's great. I just couldn't believe that reprint of a wargame you can still get in it's original form for cheap did so well. Of course, it's also the only non-MMP game I've bought in forever, and waiting on their pipeline has maybe clouded my perception of how many people buy wargames :)

Anyway, back on topic: shame about Circus Train. I was probably on the hook for a copy of this when it got printed. Though what I've seen of VPG's in-house 'deluxe' games looks quite nice, so if VPG ends up reprinting it with a box, I 'll probably still bite.

The improvement in VPG component quality was just as much a reason as the slow prepub numbers for GMT deep sixing the project. I've seen the new thick chunky VPG counters and once they got some teething problems out of the way, they are very nice quality.

The new laser-cut counters are terrific. The only problem is that the cutting laser produces some ash along the edges. VPG packaged a little branded napkin to clean the edges of the counters in Swing States.

No shit. And all that time I thought that the napkin was for the result of the excitement of the gameplay.

Color me wrong!

In their latest announcement they indicated that Deluxe Nemo's War is either the next game they are fancifying or the game after that. I'm going to buy a copy.
