Anyone play the first edition of this and what are your thoughts?

I think this one was pretty hot 3-4 years ago, but it was a little too rare to be a big hit. I am not looking forward to the threads full of people complaining about using plastic pieces instead of wooden "bits." (Does anyone else think that sounds like a euphemism for genitalia?)
Also, it might be the first Fantasy Flight reprint that is a good deal cheaper than the original edition.
It actually looks like the kind of game I'd like. I have a weakness for heavy economic Euros, so I'll be keeping an eye on it.

The first edition had more of a retro 1920s vibe at least the Lady Steam card which looked part roaring 20s part futurism.
Sorry The new Lady Steam is fugly. and what is that expression on her face?
This game, despite the name, did not need another Victorian steam punk setting with late 19th century dr livingstone types and fucking dirrigables. the art look like The Adventurers more aeg than ffg. now i know how barnes felt about borderlands. the first edition, for what it is worth, was set in the future in 2415!
the only 19 century style steam punk game I own is Mission Red Planet and it's the only one I like.
I am glad a new edition will be available but I dont like the artwork here.
Oh and the wood bits were really nice in the original

I have to wonder why almost all Euro games coming out of FFG have boards with track, spreadsheet, and other boring stuff.

I demoed this game for the original German publisher at Essen when it first came out.
Make no mistake, this is definitely an economic game and not AT. However, as far as economic games go, I think this one is actually cream of the crop. Unlike most euro-"please the emperor"-games, this one is cold and calculating - the interaction is not restricted to blocking other people, but manipulation of the various resources is key. I'd compare it more to Imperial than, say, Agricola.
I find FFG's graphic design much better than the original by the way, because it was too overproduced in my opinion and the various components appeared to be quickly thrown together. OK, Lady Steam looks a bit odd, but the graphics really required streamlining.

I only had the opportunity to play this one once, but enjoyed it quite a bit. I considered picking it up, but the price point was nuts.
Make no mistake, though - this is a vicious, vicious economic game that allows you to really screw over the other players by cornering markets. This is not a game for the casual player.

I've played this game several times, and it's a very dry economic euro game. Dry as the gobi desert. With a pasted on theme. It was based on M.U.L.E. It was definitely not worth the money people were charging for it.
If you want a comparable game that you might have tried, it reminded me of playing "Containers". If you liked Containers, then you would probably like this game.
